Whale Watching Holidays

Whales are widely classed as predators, but their food ranges from microscopic plankton to very large fish. Males are called bulls; females, cows. The young are called calves. See Orcas (killer whales), humpback, fin, beluga, sperm and minke whales, and many more and if you are (really!) lucky maybe you'll get to see a Blue whale. The best places to see whales are the cold wilderness areas of the Arctic and Antarctic; as you are travelling by ship for much of the time you have constant access to unhindered views of the sea from an elevated position. Iceland and Vancouver in Canada are also great places to see these magnificent creatures in the wild.

The traditional way to go whale watching is to take a boat out to where they live but in South Africa, the coastal town of Hermanus is ideally located for a spot of whale watching from the land (in season).
