Winter Activity Holidays in Slovakia
Slovakia is attracting a growing following amongst winter enthusiasts, looking for an alternative to the more commercial snow destinations. A combination of good snow conditions, beautiful scenery and low prices forms an appealing package. The focus of the winter falls on the magnificent Tatra Mountains, the highest part of the Carpathian range of Central Europe and an area of huge natural beauty. With 15 peaks over 2500m and favourable conditions, the winter season lasts from December to March, making this the perfect playground for winter sports. Snowshoeing, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and dogsledding are all firmly established here, with international competitions taking place across the country in many of these disciplines.
The local culture and cuisine is proudly on display, with many traditional villages now gearing themselves up for tourism. Family-run pensions are more common than hotel chains outside of the main resorts, offering the visitor a more authentic Slovakian experience. This compact but compelling country in the heart of Europe has something for everyone, and is only a short flight away.
