Small Ships Make the Difference

Our expert Arctic and Antarctic leaders and staff have made hundreds of Polar voyages and bring aboard a diversity of interests including zoology, Polar history, geology, ornithology and ocean sciences.

We now have a new section on our website which covers the Polar Fleet and all the details for each vessel can be viewed from here.

Polar Activity and Adventure

The programme of itineraries and activities is designed to maximise your time in the Arctic and Antarctic with an adaptable approach. No two voyages are the same. Wildlife weather and ice often affect the itinerary and this adds immense interest to the expedition. We also like to pioneer new destinations whenever possible. Days in the Arctic and Antarctic will be busy but will also give time for quiet reflection.

Polar Shore Excursions

Wildlife watching - be it birds, bowheads or bears - is the core of many of our programmes. Zodiacs allow incredibly close encounters with wildlife that has little reason to fear Goretexclad adventurers. You will be heading out in the company of ornithologists, geologists, historians, marine biologists, botanists and naturalists, so your enjoyment and excitement will be augmented by a wealth of shared knowledge.

Presentations on Board

Be it photography, whale recognition, penguin behaviour, the hunting tactics of the polar bear, the explanation of glaciers or the history of polar exploration we pride ourselves on having not only the finest experts but also the most. Expect talks that set out to educate, inform and entertain. Like everything else on board they do not run to stringent timetables.

Optional Polar Activities

Sea Kayaking is a different and equally thrilling experience, frequently paddling through a centimetre of porridge-like brash ice, threading between the 'bergs for unequalled views of the wildlife. Experience helps but it is not essential: fitness, however, is and the activity must be arranged when booking.

Camping in Antarctica is unforgettable - you bring the sense of adventure, we provide the gear! (Polar bears determine that this is only possible in Antarctica).

Hiking and Snowshoeing in the Polar regions - during most stops you can join hiking groups for exploratory walks, some of two hours or more.
