It’s a country with a bleak and terrible history. From the extermination of an untold number of the population – the average estimates runs in the region of two millions souls brutally murdered, executed or left to starve by the Khmer Rouge – this is a nation that has risen again in a truly remarkable amount of time. The country still bears the scars from the horrors of the 1970s, both physical and mental, and the Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields are sobering places to be. Despite the atrocities, this is a country characterised by its kindness and welcoming air. Its people are known as some of the friendliest in the world.

Cambodia holidays are perfect for the foodie traveller. Expect a deluge of deliciousness on every street corner: Fish Amok is a perennial favourite, a tasty fish and coconut curry served in a banana leaf, and lime-marinated beef (Lap Khmer) is always popular. But the real adventure is in ordering, dodging through the chaos and high pitched whine of the motorbikes to find a stall you like, settling into the plastic chairs and mingling with the locals doing the exact same thing.

A wealth of historic and architectural wonders are just waiting to be discovered on Cambodia holidays. From the splendour of Phnom Penh’s Royal Palace to the glittering floor of the Silver Pagoda, there is enough opulence for anyone’s taste.

For a wilder, more ancient experience, the iconic Angkor will leave you awestruck. The world’s world’s largest religious construction in stone is testament to the former power of the Khmer empire, but the best way to explore is by bike, a peaceful and unobtrusive way to escape the crowds and see the surrounding jungle encroaching on the ancient stone foundations and intricately carved statues.
