Ship's log: 28 February 2011 - Twelve knots with a bow scything through spume is a match for any potential sea day doldrums, particularly when the weather is Sicilian rather than South Atlantic. The biting Atlantic convergence is yet to be breached so yellow jackets remain largely virginal. Two words stay with me from Victoria's presentation, one is James, the other Caird.

My Antarctic Expedition - Drake Passage back to Ushuaia

Now crossing Drake Passage back to Ushuaia. Heavy swell on sea so feeling a little delicate but sun is shining and winds are light. Had a bit of a party last night which probably isn't helping! Wish my desk in Balham had the kind of view I have at this desk.

My Antarctic Expedition - Day 8

What a difference a day makes. Following several days of generally grey, overcast skies we awoke to a whole new world. During the night the Sea Spirit had carried us across the Bransfield Strait and then up a channel which runs between the Palmer Archipelago and the Antarctic Peninsula. She had also brought us to glorious sunshine which bounced off the snow-encrusted slopes either side of the ship. Mind...

My Antarctic Expedition - Day 7

The Sea Spirit is just leaving Deception Island - lots of derelict buildings from whaling station plus hot springs, seals and penguins. Off to another site to see if we can land again this evening. We have 50% chance as this place very weather dependent. Am trying to hang on to every moment as all too soon will be over....
