I have just finished two superb Wild flowers in the Bernese Oberland trips. The sun shone, the flowers were booming great everyone was happy. The Alps have now properly woken up after a long winter. We have been to Chamonix today and all the hotels and campsites were putting out the geranium flowerboxes ready for the summer season. I learnt to skate in Norway - I was chosen as a pupil for instructors exams - because I am known to be uncoordinated and difficult to teach. I was really worried that my aspirant instructor was going to fail - they had no skate boots in the hire shop so I was on classic boots which dont give any support so it was quite difficult to stay up.
But I managed it and did a triumphant circuit in front of the examiner. When back in Chamonix I found some skate boots to fit, the whole skating...

Last day of November 2010. There is tons of snow. Hot tub is ready. Beers are chilled!...

As well as using skis to travel across snowy terrain they were also used for hunting and eventually by the military. In 1564 Swedish soldiers equipped with skis conquered the city of Trondheim, arriving before the Norwegians who were travelling on foot.
