Day 8 - Under the Sun

Today we had a free day.  This meaning we could either choose to do optional activities or our own thing.  After the busyness of the past few days I decided to relax for the day, catch up on some writing and soak up the Egyptian winter sun.

Having had a great nights sleep, I woke early and decided to sit on my balcony and catch the early rays whilst overlooking the pool, and further into the distance the Nile.  I can’t deny this was a beautiful way to start the day – peaceful and...

Day 7 - Dam Love, Shish and Hookahs

Up a little later that usual, we check out, say our goodbyes and head to the bus.  Today is a day of optional activities.  The first of our excursions is the Aswan High Dam.  An impressive engineering feat, the Dam is quite a popular site to see in Aswan, with a fair few buses parked up.  Military men scout the Dam, as Sayed explained that Egypt gets threats from opposing countries sometimes (the last being 6 years ago), because they know how important the Dam is to Egyptians, and because...

Day 6 - That IS interesting...

This morning we were kindly woken up with a call from reception at 3:30am.  Today we journey to Abu Simbel, and we need to be on the bus for 4am.  Clutching our pillows and breakfast boxes, we clamber onto the bus like zombies.  The bus journey, despite being three hours, is not awful as you might think it would be.  The roads are perfectly fine and not in bad condition at all. And if I’m honest, I pretty much slept all the way there.  But one of the main benefits of going by bus is be...

Day 5 - Temple Time 2: Return of the Temples

After a great night of sleep, we had to be up and ready for 6:45am for our trip in Edfu.

Before I explain any further I must mention that last night the staff of the boat arranged a Galabia evening.  This was a party for the guests on board, with all dressing up in traditional Egyptian robes (Galabia).  With games, raffles and dancing, everybody joined in with the fun and had a really good time.  It was a really lovely way to end the day after dinner.  The staff are so warm and frie...

Day 4 - Tomb Town!

I think this may have been my best night’s sleep so far as the beds onboard are incredibly comfortable.  Good job as we were up at 6am, to be ready and fed by 7am for an early excursion to the famous Valley of the Kings (or Tomb Town as I like to call it!).

To get to the West Bank of the Nile, you usually travel by bus, which can end up taking two hours out of your day in total.  Instead, we took a small motor boat with an awning decorated in beads, colourful material and little fla...
