Training

At the time of writing, the trip status is "Guaranteed to run" with only "4 spaces remaining".  By my calculation there must be around a dozen people already signed up - surely I won't be at the back all day, every day?

In order to try and prevent me from being followed at 2mph by the support vehicle for 1000km (apart from the obvious advantage of being able to hitch a ride) I am busy training.  I'm cycling almost every day providing it's not raining, too cold, too...


 
 

Introduction

The trip - I've signed up for my first ever mountain bike holiday, or cycling holiday for that matter.  I will be spending my summer "holiday" cycling from Lhasa to Kathmandu, across 1000km of the vast geographical expanse of the Himalayas.  My kit bag will be crammed full of sunscreen and lycra, and my rucksack with cameras and chocolate.  It will be an exhausting, emotional and, dare I say it, 'spiritual' journey through the wilderness and Buddhist culture of the Tibetan homela...

Cameras 6: Antarctic winter 1

We are designing a new scheme to monitor penguins in Antarctica in much more detail than ever before. Step one relies entirely on showing that cameras can survive the winter. Operating electrical equipment remotely, in logistically difficult places to access, which experience extreme temperatures is challenging for both scientists, and the equipment we use. You will therefore understand our nervousness as we returned to our sites: did our cameras manage to survive the Antarctic winter?
