Viewing the offerings this month on a sweltering South London afternoon was not as inspiring as normal, that is, until I came across this belter which was an easy winner. The photograph is all about composition and light. It can rain heavily and bounteously in Cuzco, it can also be fine. Photos in either of those meteorological conditions have been done a thousand times. This old city is photogenic by nature but to capture this moment as the sun shines through the rain is superb. The diagonals of the lawns are blended with the ancient lines of the buildings, the glistening cobbles and the distant mountains. The walkers and cars are necessary but not pervasive and the light is simply brilliant as it illuminates the teeth of the photo yet contrasts with the angry nimbus above. This sort of shot would never win this monthly competition unless taken in these demanding conditions. I hope you enjoyed a chilled pisco sour afterwards, you deserved it.
