Every photographer, especially wildlife ones need a little bit of luck. Here it came in two forms: light (sunshine in a rainforest is rare) and a young infant primate. Luck is only part of the equation though and Gunnar has done a superb job here with a bold crop (as all crops should be) and baize framing. It is a magnificent exposure in trying conditions but by concentrating on the young ape's eyes, he has created an outstanding portrayal of our closest relatives. Gunnar entered plenty of pictures; they were all good. In fact, this month's portfolio was at least 200% better than the previous one, but this single parent and child study takes the plaudits.
