As most travel photographers switch to digital, although easier to choose sepia, black and white or 'enhanced' colour modes it definitely feels rarer to see a good black and white image. In colour this would be a beautiful portrait, but in black and white it becomes a strong, powerful image of mother and child. The thoughtful parent in traditional dress, the subtle texture of her clothes and the resting infant wrapped up warm on her back, the image brought to life as Andrew throws the background out of focus, boldly zooming in on his subject and carefully focusing with the narrow depth of field. Lastly, for me it's the natural pose and not the staged portrait that makes the viewer comfortable, enjoying the images simplicity.
