This is a landscape image with real impact. The composition is bold and strong, and the decision to give two thirds of the picture area to the sky gives a fantastic sense of the space and freedom that the trekkers must be experiencing. It’s often more visually interesting to have a horizon line a third of the way from the top or bottom of the frame rather than in the middle and it certainly works here. The other factor that makes this photo a winner is the side lighting, which defines the contours of the dunes and makes the image really three dimensional, as well as casting wonderful long shadows from the tiny figures. Small though they are in the photo, the walkers add so much to the success of the pic. A fabulous image - it just makes me want to be there!
