CUBA: LA ISLA GRANDE

This is one country on the adventure travel circuit you’d be crazy to miss, especially as the clock of commercialism is ticking on Cuba and the faded, time-warped naivety that has made it so special is not likely to last much longer. For now at least, Cuba really is all it’s cracked up to be – a quixotic blend of revolutionary history, irresistible salsa sounds, vintage cars, white sand Caribbean beaches and picture perfect colonial beauty.

With live music on every corner, Cubans know how to party and you can expect to receive real warmth and hospitality along with your cocktails and cigars, despite the punishing US sanctions, queues, food rationing and the questionable role of tourism in this communist society.

You can certainly expect adventure travel in Cuba and not always the kind you’re looking for. 1 Love Havana
Havana is incredibly photogenic, atmospheric and unique. Drum beats, the sounds of strumming guitars and the buzz of local life fill every street. 2 Love Caribbean beach life
Crystalline waters, palm-fringed beaches and Caribbean tranquillity are to be found everywhere along Cuba’s coastline. You’ll have heard of popular Varadero and beautiful Cayo Saetia, which was until recently the restricted private reserve of high ranking communist officials. 3 Soak up history in Santiago de Cuba
The stage for the most important events of the revolutionary struggle makes almost every street corner of this city famous. It also holds on to clear musical routes with a hedonistic carnival every July - and the streets are alive pretty much every other night of the year, too.

4 Take in Trinidad
Full of fantastic museums - practically a living museum itself - the UNESCO world heritage town of Trinidad is awash with perfectly preserved cobbled streets, pretty churches and grand colonial mansions with painted shutters. Be sure to save some of your sightseeing energy to hit the bars, music clubs and street parties at night.

5 Discover Cuba Natura
It’s not all about the culture! Cuba's unvisited western province, Pinar del Río is a paradise for walking holidays, bird watching and opportunities to discover tropical plants, visit small private farms and working plantations. There are plenty of beautiful beaches nearby, too.
