Sierra Maestra
Sierra Maestra – a new place for trekking and cycling in Cuba with Exodus Travels
In the far south-east of the island of Cuba, the Sierra Maestra is Cuba's largest mountain range, and a potent symbol for the Cuban nation, since the area became part of contemporary Cuban lore when the Castro brothers escaped into the lush hills to organize the revolution.
A spectacular showcase of flora and fauna, with a great diversity of unusually colourful birdlife, the Sierra Maestra is home to pygmy owls, thumbnail-sized frogs, and butterflies with invisible wings. The mountain range includes the highest points of the island, with Pico Turquino the highest at 6,580 ft (1,973m).
