Holidays to the Simien Mountains

Simien mountains holiday. The Simien Mountains are an area of enormous natural beauty, as recognised by UNESCO who have declared it a World Heritage Site. The isolated splendour of the rocky plateaux and deep gorges are a major feature of this sensational national park. In addition, there is a rich and varied wildlife. With over 850 species of birds, 28 of them endemic to the country, it is a bird lover’s paradise. Species include the Lanner falcon, Wattled ibis, Tacazze sunbird, Lammergeyer and Egyptian vulture. Indigenous animals found in the mountains include the Simien fox, Gelada baboon and Walia Ibex. Indeed, the Walia Ibex lives only in the Simiens and the park was initially set up to protect this rare creature. On the flora front Giant Lobelia, Red Hot Pokers and Euphorbia Candelabra are abundant in parts of the Simiens.
