The magnificent Mayan ruins of Copan have 21 intricately carved stelae (columns of stone), on which the passage of time is believed to have been recorded. The Caribbean coast is a mixture of banana-exporting ports, historic towns and diving resorts. Along the coast is a string of interesting islands, largely populated by English speaking Afro-Caribbeans, such as Roatan where warm, clear Caribbean waters allow for excellent snorkeling. The capital, Tegucigalpa, was founded as a mining camp in 1578. It comprises of two towns, Comayaguela and Tegucigalpa, divided by a river and surrounded by peaks, notably El Picacho.
