It has rarely been impossible to visit Libya but the politics of recent years have kept it out of reach of the average traveller. Travel to Libya still remains a challenge, but the government is now actively encouraging tourism. Libya has a lot to offer; largely desert today, in classical times it was fertile and one of the richest provinces of the Roman Empire. Both Greeks and Romans have left a wealth of remains, including some of the finest historical sites in the Mediterranean world, and visits to Leptis Magna, considered one of the finest Roman ruins on the Mediterranean, will stay with you for many years.
