Chiapas, the southernmost state of Mexico, is a fascinating mix of cool highlands, coast and tropical forest. It is home to many of the finest sites of the Mayans, and has a unique culture today, a mix of modern Mexico and the beliefs of the people who lived there before Cortes and the Spaniards arrived. This is best seen in San Cristobal de las Casas, a delightful town high in the hills. In Chiapas are also found some of the most dramatic landscapes in the country – top of the list here is the magnificent 1500m-deep Sumidero Canyon.
