Visits to Sri Lanka provide a fantastic mix of culture, history, people, food, wildlife and beaches. Behind the beautiful coastline there are thick jungles and vast palm and banana plantations cut by high waterfalls. The ancient capital of Polonnaruwa has great temples, stupas and statues of the Buddha, at nearby Sigiriya there is the impressive 100m high rock fortress and on the coast the 15th century Portuguese fort at Galle overlooking the cricket pitch. There is game viewing in Yala National Park where elephant, bear and deer and some fantastic bird spotting are common. A trip to the elephant orphanage near Kandy is a highlight, but for most people the best thing about Sri Lanka is the charming people.
