Situated some 430m above sea level on an arid plateau, Aleppo is Syria's second largest city, with a fine Saracen citadel on a hill in the centre. There are some interesting covered streets in the enormous bazaar, which is built around an impressive mosque. In the city centre is the museum of Assyrian culture, containing all the best finds from the Assyrian sites of the area.
