Kailash
The far west of Tibet is one of the most inaccesible places in Asia. A high, cold, windswept plateau criss-crossed with dramatic mountains, many of them un-named and unclimbed, and inhabited by the hardiest of nomads with their herds of yaks and goats. In this hostile environment is found one of the holiest places on earth, the remarkable peak of Kailash, sacred to both Buddhists and Hindus as the navel of the universe. Join pilgrims of both religions as they trek around Kailash, and witness the fascinating festival of Saga dawa, when a huge flagpole is re-erected each year at the start of the pilgrimage route.
