Up the Inca Trail and Down the Aisle!

After years of intending to walk the Inca Trail ‘some day’, Exodus client Sarah Strickland decided in spring 2004 that the best time was now, so she booked on the September 2004 departure of the 16-day Exodus trip, “Inca Trail and the Amazon Rainforest”. Little did she know four years later she would be marrying Andrew, who was also on the trip…

Andrew travelled from Chile to join the trip as part of his round-the-world travels. He had already enjoyed Exodus trips in Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.

They competed with each other on the trail, striding off ahead at the front of the pack, and were among just a handful of the group that climbed Huayna Picchu, with its birds eye view of Machu Picchu. They spent hours sharing their life stories as they travelled across the altiplano by bus, amidst a spectacular lightning storm. On Amantani Island, they sat late into the night watching a meteor shower, before returning to their native homestay. On their last morning in Lima, Andrew gave Sarah a greenstone pendant he had bought in New Zealand to remind her of him as he continued his travels.

In November, Sarah flew out to New York to join Andrew for the last few days of his trip before they flew home together.

In January 2006 they had had enough of their long-distance relationship, so Andrew moved in with Sarah in Cambridge. Two years later, Andrew asked Sarah to marry him and they got married in Cambridge on the 9th August 2008, almost four years after meeting on the Exodus trip in Peru.
