Would you like to go on Voliday?

Exodus has been running special volunteer trips in Zambia and Morocco for a number of years thanks to the drive and enthusiasm of tour leader Andy McKee. On these holidays part of the itinerary is set aside so that clients can spend time helping the local community which is very rewarding for all involved. But be warned; once you have been on one volunteer departure you may find yourself returning again and again as Exodus client Richard Thornton has discovered! He has found the experience so fulfilling that so far he has been on seven volunteer trips. He has been to both Zambia and Morocco and is the perfect person to explain what the trips are all about.

Morocco

Volunteers painting Tijhza school Tijhza is a remote village in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains and Exodus has been working with the village community for a number of years. In September we hope to make a start on the construction of the village Hamman (bath house). The site was cleared with the help of the May 2011 volunteer trip.

A regular task is to help spruce up the houses of the poorest in the community with paint pot and brush. No specialist skills are needed so it means that everyone can contribute to the project. Working closely with the villagers you will get an ‘up-close’ view of life in Tijhza. The 25 September departure will also give the opportunity to visit a new project near the beautiful coastal town of Essaouira and stay in the exquisite Riad Bledna, a peaceful respite from the all-round assault on the senses that is Marrakech.

Zambia

Helen Matthews at Chikumbi Community CentreThe small village of Kasula in Chikumbi, Zambia, although remote, has a strong sense of community. The Zambezi Valley Volunteer Departure will give you the opportunity to stay in a village homestead with a local family. Showering under the stars and playing cards by torchlight are all part of the daily routine.  You will be involved in a number of activities ranging from supporting school sports, checking the distribution of malaria nets to building a compost bin for the village garden. An immensely rewarding experience topped off by the opportunity to view some of Africa’s finest wildlife as you canoe down the mighty Zambezi.
