I'm too travelling solo and booked onto this tour.
But we'll give you a run for your money :)
I'm Trish and the other half is Dave, and we are flying from London too.
We can arrange to meet up at the airport nearer the time if you want. Must admit it will be our first time on South African Airlines, but the food can't be worse than Sri Lankan (Lamb Burger, Fish Cake and Pizza all in the same dish for the main meal ).
We are going for the wildlife, especially the whales at Hermanus. We only have to get a 'sniff' of whale watching and we are booked (You can never see too many whales!!)
Are you going to the Shebeen on the first night? We decided not to because after a long flight we are never that hungry for a day or so .... tend to snack, so it seemed a waste of money where we are concerned.
Yes, I'm sure we can arrange something to all meet up at the airport, which would be good.
Oh, how could I forget about the penguins? Yes I definitely want to see the penguins too. A colleague of mine spent a month in Cape Town earlier this year at a 'penguin sanctuary' looking after injured ones. LOL she said she's changed her opinion of them now ... they can be vicious little devils!! And, of course, the elephants too as I've not seen an African elephant so far. And if we are very lucky maybe a leopard (my colleague managed to see one on a safari trip she did while she was there.
This is getting very exciting now!!
The luggage will, I'm sure, be fine. We have never had a problem yet, it's always arrived with us. We just make sure to ask if they have 'tagged it right through'. But we can sort that nearer the time. Shouldn't be too long now before we have to 'pay up' the final amount and then we know it's getting close.
Ahh yes the pay date... the only part of the trip i'm not looking forward to!
Looks like it's time to pay up!! Still at least that means we are getting close to the departure now, but I do so dislike handing over my hard earned cash, even though the trip will be worth every penny.
Sorry for the delayed response, I was expecting any posts to be synced to my outlook account!!! I'm not flying from London, I'm flying from Birmingham and spending a couple of nights in Cape Town prior to flying onto Port Elizabeth.
This is my second time in South Africa and I can't wait to return. The coastline is stunning!
Your last posts have just reminded me about paying the balance, I haven't as yet received any reminders.
Just to be 100% clear, UK people don't need a visa right?
People from the UK don't need visas, so that's one thing less to think about.
Good for you Claire, this will be our first time in South Africa, but we are staying on in Cape Town till the Sunday so that we have a few extra days to look around.
I finally found the courage to let go of our hard earned money today ..... but oh it hurt saying goodbye!!
Me too, balance now £0.00!!!
I'm also staying on in Cape Town at the end of the tour but just for an extra night (I think) .....I've doubted myself now and can't remember if it's one or two nights. Anyway after this I am flying on to Jo'burg to stay with a friend for a week before heading back to the UK.
I stayed for the majority of my visit last year in Knysna and it was beautiful, I'm looking forward to experiencing more of the stunning coast line and I'm definitely up for Whale watching too.
This is the bit that drags, we've paid up and it's too early to pack! What to do but 'twiddle my thumbs' for a few weeks??
It's good news that there are at least four of us up for the Whale watching, although I'm sure we won't be the only ones.
Excellent, sounds like everyone wants to do most of the trips offered!
Most of the trips offered are very good with Exodus. However, having said that if the majority do something we don't particularly want to do we have been known to branch our and do our own trip (Caye Caulker was an example when the majority wanted to go snorkelling somewhere, so five of us hired our own boat and went to see the Manatees instead).
Hello, I'll be on this trip as well. I'm travelling solo from London too, so would be really nice to meet up at Heathrow. Even if we're not together on the plane, we can get a headstart on learning each other's names!
It was the penguins that helped me make the choice on this trip, but definitely looking forward to seeing other wildlife, especially the whales and elephants.
I eat fish, but not other meat, so was wondering about the shebeen too. Might give exodus a call to see what they think, although I may just go along anyway to get in the holiday mood!
I got a couple of guidebooks from the Library to look through and starting to get v excited!
Nice to know another member of the group. I guess that nearer the time we'd better all put a photo of ourselves up on here so we know who we are looking for at Heathrow.
It's got all the makings of being a fabulous trip, really looking forward to it
We tend to take cash, but split it up into several piles and stash it in different places throughout the luggage and our persons. I've always found ATM's are never there when you need them or are out of order and you spend ages trying to get your money. I also got a 'Pacsafe' bag several years ago, which has steel mesh in the body, and steel wires in the strap so no one can get it off of you very easily. Once in the hotels you can put it in the safe anyway.
I was actually just coming on here to say that the rand has been going up this last week and the Post Office on line has a very good rate today at 14.95. Don't know if it will continue to climb, but I've just ordered ours as it's gone up from 14.4 at the beginning of the week.
Yes £500.00 sounds about right for the trip ..... there is also the tip for the guide and drivers to factor in (assuming the guide is a good one this time, which I'm sure he/she will be). I think the food and drink are reasonably priced over there anyway.
At a rough guess I would say around 5.00 pm to 5.30 pm, maybe a bit earlier depending on traffic. What time are you likely to be getting there??
Probably around 3pm just incase of motorway traffic. I know it's a bit early but i'd rather be safe than sorry now that i've paid up.
It would be nice for people to swap details nearer the time and maybe meet up before the flight.
Ok, I've checked the plan and in zone A before check in is the SA enquiry desk just inside the doors. I suggest (for anyone interested) we meet in that area around 5.30 ish, unless anyone else has a better suggestion.
Only 5 weeks to go folks!!
What is anyone taking for mosquito protection? Spry, tablets etc
Welcome to our merry band!! Yes I think we are all on the 9.00 pm SA flight and a few of us are meeting up before check in so we'll see you there if you like. Re shorts v. trousers I usually have a couple of pairs of both to be on the safe side.
Claire, we are taking wheeled duffels as usual.
I think I have everything we need now, just the camera batteries to charge up before we leave. I'm sooooo looking forward to starting out now!
Hi all. I'm coming too, travelling solo and very much looking forward to it! Haven't packed at all yet but naively expecting to live out of shorts/t-shirts for the hols so probably will be pretty light luggage wise. I imagine SA will turn the temperature up for our arrival... Would be good to meet you all at the terminal beforehand :-)
I really wouldn't worry Sarah, from what I've seen before with Exodus it comes in all shapes and sizes. We just can't be bothered lugging much around with us so that's why we use the wheeled duffels.
Look forward to seeing you before check in Chris.
Hi everyone now I'm really excited as have just received final boarding instructions. Really looking forward to meeting everyone. Helen
Same here, I had a quick look on google earth at where we're staying on the first night (Humewood Hotel, 33 Beach Road, Port Elizabeth) and it looks lovely, right by the sea!
