AYM Classic Kenya Safari 26 January 2013 -
Hi Angela. This will be my first safari and am a bit uncertain what I should be taking and wearing other than my camera and, probably iPad. Excitement is building.

Hi Angela and Anthony, my name's Mark.I shall be joining you on this trip too and certainly looking forward to it .Have done several trips with Exodus and Explore but like you both , my first safari...either of you from Kent?

ps Angela have you got the Departure date wrong...i think its the 26th, not 27th Jan

AYM -
Hi Anthony and Mark, yes I got the departure date wrong opps:).  This site looks useful for what to take http://www.african-safari-journals.com/safari-packing-list.html..  I went to the Mara watch charity eve last week there were some amazing photo's, made it all feel more real. No not from Kent. Counting down the weeks.

Hi Angela and Mark. An interesting article in the Sunday Times about packing the minimum amount of clothing as the volume will increase with each repacking, also avoid white as this may scare off the animals and blue attracts the tsetse flie -a bit of a problem as most of my clothes seem to be blue. The article was by Deb Tittle who is a guide of 16yrs experience living and working in Zambia. I'm not sure how much of her guidance translates to Kenya. Do you have any views about how much Kenyan and US or Sterling currency to take? (I live in Buckinghamshire) Anthony

I did see the Suday Times article funnily enough and kept it.... keep away from blue clothing it seems or else you'll be 'sleeping ' the whole holiday !!odd...

re the money , i'm not sure how much we should take as you say but I can't imagine we'll need much in the Mara.Biggest expense is the balloon trip but i guess I'll be taking a few dollars and getting some local currency at Nairobi airport. What are you guys doing about the visa  and malaria prophylaxis by the way?

Malaria -

It is very important to take some protection.  My doctor recommends Malarone which has the advantage that you don't have to start taking it two weeks before you leave. I was able to get mine from Tescos pharmacy on a private prescription from my Doctor's surgery. Tesco was a bit cheaper.

thanks Anthony...yes,I've been doing some research too and like you , have a prescription for Malarone . Was also persuaded to have a Yellow Fever jab (apparently high risk in the Mara). Not cheap either!

must rememeber to have a look at the website Angela recommended

Yellow fever -
Hopefully not that common as jab not recommended for the elderly which I'm afraid includes me. Anthony

Yellow Fever -

Read somewhere that it is only essential if entering the country from an area infected with Yellow fever.  Counting down the days :).
