Evening Mark, well ive booked it but only the deposit at the moment as untill i sort out my work extension.in the meantime,im taking my bike to get repaired, r u taking your bike or hiring one?
No, i am not taking my bike, relying on their cycles which i think are pretty good. Will start training in earnest this weekend.......well thats what i am telling myself, depends on how many pubs i pass or not........

Just been on this trip late March/early April - absolutely fantastic time, you will have a great trip. Unless you are ultra fussy about your bike, wouldn't bother taking your own with you - the bikes they provide are totally fine for the journey, in good condition and well maintained throughout - just take you saddle if you have a preference. Is a real hassle on the train journey if you have your own bike; lugging on / off train and storing in small room with 4 bunks!
Jealous of you, would do the trip again without hesitation if I had the money and time!

Yes Mark, best trip I've ever had! Don't worry about slumming it - only basic night is the train, all hotels are fantastic quality - wait until you see the hotel at Mui Ne...beautiful! All have air con, a few have swimming pools and all are spotlessly clean....oh an often the beer in the mini bar is cheaper than buying it out!!!
You will have a fantastic time - make sure you get fit, makes it more fun....and enjoy! :)
Hi Lorna, ive been reading your post on your trip, how much cycling did you do on the trip? or was it alot of time on the bus?
Hi Paul, the amount of cycling is pretty much as it says in the trip notes - on some days though, we were able to do a little longer than the distances quoted - I think our longest day was just over 90km and on one of the rest days there was the chance to do an extra 20km to the Marble Mountains. I did the whole lot (a bit over 500km I think) although some people did parts of it on the bus if they were knackered (it follows the whole way). Parts of the cycling are quite tough, particularly the day that you head to Da Lat and then then next day, away from Da Lat. There is a lot more uphill than they say in the notes (though technically speaking they are correct as there is a downhill bias!) - and bits of the uphill are pretty steep, with very high temperatures to contend with! Having said all that, as long as you are fit, it's fine - I'm certainly not a cyclist and managed well! They break the days up into 20km chunks and are always on hand with drinks and snacks at each stop.
Some days, there are long journeys on the bus in addition to the cycling, as they don't let you cycle on Highway 1 more than totally necessary (and you will see why when you get there - it's mental!) - but to be honest these bus bits are quite good for chilling out and having a nap after all the strain on the bikes - usually not on there more than a couple of hours, although there was a four hour bit at one point.
Definitely the best way to see the country - I came back super fit and lifting 10lb more on all machines at the gym!
ive started the training, rode my bike back from the repair shop about 5miles and felt ok.Did a spinning class yesterday to see what my fitness was like.And today my thighs are burning and im feeling like a oldman (and walking like one lol) and they say exercise is good for you!!!!!

Hi everyone. I'm really excited already about this trip. One question, Lorna, if you're still viewing this thread, do the bikes have handlebar bags? I did a trip to Kerala with Explore last year and the bikes had these, which were great as it meant you didn't need to wear a rucksack in the heat. If they're not supplied on this trip, I think I'll buy one. I did a bike ride at the weekend to get the fitness up and fell off for the first time since I was a teenager... Regards, Anne
Hi Mark, ive had a ankle injury which has slowed my progress down abit, but now ive started again.im deff on the trip now as i will be out of work at the time of the holiday.Now i have something to look forward to!!

Sorry to hear about your slight set back. Whilst the weather is reasonable i've been getting out every other night for a couple of hours. Starting to make a difference, i don't collapse now........
Still get other cyclist motoring past me....my excuse is that i am going for distance rather than speed.....Will go out tomorrow,,,,depends on how England do tonight.

No they don't provide handlebar bags, just water bottle and cage on the bike.
Whether you take one or not is probably down to personal preference - nobody on our trip used one. As the support vehicle follows the whole time (and meets you every 20km for drinks and snacks etc), the only thing you need to carry is water - I used a 2 litre camelbak, with the water bottle as an emergency 'top up' (did use it a couple of times!). With the heat, personally I found the capacity and ease of the camelbak essential, but you do get really sweaty on your back!

Hi Mark and Pauls. Thanks Lorna for the info about the bikes - it's great to hear from someone who's been on the trip recently. The hotels sound better than the descriptions in the trip notes. I think I shall buy a small handlebar bag, just for easy access to my camera more than anything as Vietnam sounds very photogenic. The injuries from my bike crash (elbow, hand and pride) are healing now, but I decided to do a run rather than a cycle ride on Sunday. Happy cycling. Anne

Yes i am probably on average doing about the same as you during the week. work getting in the way at the moment. Having the right gear definitely helps. Nearer the time we should all meet up at a central location for a days ride.

What jabs were you advised to get?
I had Typhoid, HepA and B and advised to have Malaria, which i will do, just need to decide on what course of treatment and consider Japanese encephalitus and possibly rabies.
Rabies i am not sure about as we will not be going too much into the wilderness.....
Your doctor will advise you on current requirements.
Ps the needles are small.

Hi Paul, yes i have a course of Malaria tablets plus plenty of DEET malaria repellant. Training variable depending on work, weather and mood.............. Out tonight though !!!

Hi Mark, Training stopped at the moment as ive got a foot problem following me running the bristol half marathon last weekend, so im not doing anything in the next couple of weeks.
only 7 weeks to go and i can't wait!!
