Deet for excema sufferers -
Trip - MOC - CYCLE INDOCHINA & ANGKOR, Departure Date - Sunday 19th December 2010
I get excema, which is exacerbated by chemicals like SLS in sunscreens, shampoos, etc. Any suggestions for an alternative to Deet (am going on cycling trip to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam in December.

Excema -
Hope this helps. I'm trying 'Avon Skin So Soft' It's supposed to be very good, they use it on horses. Being a skin cream I guess it will be better than DEET. I'm getting two bottles to try this winter. KDM

Make sure the Skin so Soft -
Make sure the Skin so Soft has Bug Guard 20% IR3535 (an insecticide) in it otherwise it provides only momentary protection. Here is a good link for alternative solutions http://www.entomology.wisc.edu/mosquitosite/topicalrepel.html

Try Picaradin -

There is an alternative to Deet, which I find actually works better.  On the Sawyer website: Sawyer Premium Insect Repellent 20% Picaridin - 3 oz spray Picaridin is a promising new insecticide its effect is similar to DEET, yet it is safer on gear and equipment than DEET. At 20%, this long lasting topical insect repellent is effective up to 8 hours against mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies, gnats, chiggers and fleas. Picaridin is more effective at repelling biting flies than DEET. Our 20% Picaridin is virtually odorless It has a mild citrus scent added to it which quickly evaporates away.

I used it in Kenya and Tanzania last summer without a problem and worked as advertised in keeping away mosquitoes and other biting insects.
