Yep, I'm on this trip, leaving from London on 4th April...
Happy to chat!
Hi Ruth - apologies for delay in replying, busy trying to sort a visa and my flights. Still not quite there but ever hopeful. It's now looking like I may meet up with the main group in Istanbul before flying to Tashkent - not the most logical route in from WA but seems to be the easiest. Have you been to this part of the world before? Are you travelling with others or solo? I was due to go to Iran but for rather obvious reasons it's been cancelled. Uzbekistan seemed a good alternative. Travelling alone. Very excited!
I hope to join on this trip too. Getting my visa is proving to be a bit complicated, but I think it will be done in the next week or so (fingers crossed!)
I am a Canadian living in Kazakhstan and will be flying into Tashkent a day before the tour - Tues April 3. Happy to meet up with anyone else that day. Really looking forward to this adventure!
Hi Denise - good to hear from you. I've not yet got my visa sorted either...actually still waiting on the Letter of Invitation from Exodus. A little over two weeks to go and I'm getting a tad anxious! I won't be arriving into Tashkent until the early hours of the 4th so I'll miss that extra day with you I'm afraid. Is it the resources industry that has you working in Kazakhstan? I'm sure you must have some interesting stories, and I look forward to hearing them.
Hi Rosi -Nice to 'virtually' meet you. My LOI just came through last Fri night and so I'm sure yours is also on its way. Not sure which embassy you will deal with but you may check regarding the Nauryz holiday - Mar 21 to 23 is 'New Year' in the region which I think may apply to Uzbekistan like Kazakhstan. It'll all work out - that's what we have to believe!
Most of my stories of Astana, Kazakhstan involve snow and cold right now! I work at Nazarbayev University and have been here 1.5 years but am still struggling with Russian and my Kazakh language is non-existent... not sure if I even want to try Uzbek!
Phew! Finally got my visa papers posted off (to the consulate in Singapore) on Friday. Now I just have to keep my fingers crossed that approval is given and I can arrange for a pick up there and delivery by courier back to Australia before I leave. My fingers are crossed for you too. I'll be fascinated to hear what took you to Astana (such an extraordinary looking place!)- I'm also hoping that I don't need to be prepared for snow in Uzbekistan? You're a deal further north but maybe I'd better check the weather forecast again. We've been sweltering in 30degree+ for the past 3 months so it'll be quite a contrast whatever.
Good luck with your visa, Rosi. I was SO relieved last week when I got mine back from the Uzbek embassy in Almaty with a fresh new visa! I paid a small fortune to have it done urgently as I'm travelling this week and need my passport and I was lucky to find a local travel agent who helped immensely. Now I can start looking forward to the actual trip and not only thinking about getting a visa! I'm sure yours will come through too, but I know how you feel - you'll be more relaxed once you have it in your hands.
Re: weather - I've been told by colleagues who travelled at this time last year to pack for most weather (not snow hopefully although still below zero in Tashkent today!). Hope spring will really break through in the next couple weeks for us!
So pleased to read your visa came through! And yes, you're right, until it's in my hand I'll not be resting easy. Travel safely, and I look forward to meeting you in Tashkent (the power of positive thought!).
All the best, Rosi
