Is anyone else climbing Kili over the Christmas period? I am just checking the kit list and what I still need and, for the first time, this trip is starting to seem real and is happening very soon!
I am going to book onto this trip tomorrow - I think have most of the kit I need, have just ordered a poncho!
Have you done much training?
So I've booked on the trip now. So I guess I need to start on those final preparations! Argh.
Have you had your Yellow Fever jab? I've since found out there is a worldwide shortage on the vaccination now so have struggled to find a centre for it.
That's great news that you've booked the trip!
I had my jab yesterday and it hurt :-( It was the first jab I've had in my back. Still, the pain was short-lived and it's a 1-off jab that lasts for life so it was worth it.
I think I'm up to date on all the medical stuff now, including kit to take with me. I'm still working on all the hiking gear - I haven't got a poncho and am not sure if I can get one or not now. Gonna go to an outdoors shop this weekend for final bits and pieces.
A friend recommended taking an e-reader for for the evenings which I thought was great advice. She also said to wear the batter under clothing so it lasts longer.
Do you know how many people we will be on the trip?
We are a group of 6 apparently, 3 girls, including me, a male and a couple.
I have my jab booked in for Monday, I think its just the standard 10 year one though.
I have a kindle so will take that - also don't forget your head torch! You'll be able to order a poncho on Amazon, I ordered mine from Cotswolds and it was £4. I am sure you'll be able to get one there anyway in Arusha. I am just decided if I am going to buy a therma rest or hire one there. Do you have one?
I've not heard of batter clothing, what is it? I wear icebreaker tops as they tend to not smell.
6 people; cool! I hope your jab doesn't hurt like mine did.
Thanks for the advice about the poncho. I'll try and pick one up when I get there as I currently work on a remote Russian island just north of Japan and it's a real pain to get anything out here from England. The post is slow and somewhat unreliable.
However, we do have a small Columbia store here and I'm heading there this afternoon to get last minute things. I'll check there but they currently have their winter gear in so I doubt they'll have ponchos.
I do have a therma rest which I bought in the summer. It was expensive so I'd recommend hiring if you're not likely to use it again/ often.
Sorry about my typo in the last mail - my friend advised wearing the battery under clothing to make it last longer!
I think I've got almost everything now! Because I live in a ridiculously cold place, I already have plenty of clothing to keep warm. The only waterproof trousers I have are my ski pants though. Whilst they keep me incredibly warm, they're not too breathable so I may pick up some new ones today, depending on what the store has.
Guess I'll walk to the store to get some kms training done.
Have a good weekend,
Hey there Shaye
So jab done - didn't hurt at all, though mine is only valid for 10 years, so perhaps is a different type..
Wow - that is quite a work location. I have ordered two ponchos, so will have a spare one that I'll take with me (its yellow and wasn't keen on the colour), so you are welcome to use it if you need to and don't manage to get one.
That's ok - I figured that was what you meant after I sent the email. I'll be taking two batteries for camera and hope they will last. But yes, put under clothes and wrap in socks when not in use. Also sleep with anything you don't want to freeze in the bottom of your sleeping bag. I went to Nepal a few years ago and my wet wipes froze!
Still not decided on the therma rest, will probably just hire one.
I'm glad to hear that your jab didn't hurt.
Thank you so much for offering to lend me your poncho; that's very kind of you and a solution for me as I haven't been able to get one.
I think I have everything now. The true test will be next weekend though when I pack everything and then run to the shops for anything I don't have!
Have a great weekend.
I am confused by all the dates being published. If so, I am looking forward to meeting you all. If you are travelling from Heathrow, I would be happy to meet for a coffee before departure.
I guess this trip is departing from Heathrow on December 22nd. I am not joining the group flights though, so will meet you on December 23rd in Tanzania. I think Helen is flying out from England though?
Can't wait to meet you and finally get this trip started! I got my suitcase out this weekend to start packing!
Hey! Thanks for clarifying! I was getting paranoid about my ticket! Not the first time I turned up on the wrong day for an event! :-)
Exciting!! Packed yesterday as have a busy week ahead!Suitcase is full of jumpers!!
Looking forward to meeting you too. Have a great week ahead...
Nice to meet you. I will indeed be flying from Heathrow, not sure what time I'll get there yet. My mobile no is 07866492321, if you are at a loose end at the airport then give me a call.
I am a nightmare at packing... knowing me... will probably do it Sunday afternoon, ten minutes before I get into the car!
Looking forward to meeting you both soon.
Good morning both of you,
Packing, aarrgghh! My journey starts today as I have to go to Moscow for visa paperwork. And, as I'm a school teacher, today is the first day of my holiday!
I'm trying to triple check everything but am nervous I've forgotten something important! Still, 3.5 hours til I need to leave for the airport so there's still time to cram more into my case!
See you both on Monday? I'm arriving in Tanzania early on Sunday morning but I think the group flight arrives on Monday.
Have a safe flight to Tanzania.
Safe travels to you - if you find when you get to Tanzania that you have forgotten anything then either send a note on here or drop me a text and am more than happy to bring it along.
We arrive Monday morning I believe so will see you very soon!
Argh - is it too late to start my training?!
Thank you Helen. It's probably just nerves... have I packed this, have I packed that?! Remember to pack your yellow fever certificate!!! If your plane gets re-routed through a country with yellow fever and you're delayed there, you're going to need it to get into Tanzania.
Training? Hmm, that begins on Tuesday, right?
