So anyone else booked on this trip? My name is Rob and I live in Leighton Buzzard which is half an hour up the M1 from London. I'm in London quite a bit so if anyone fancies a pre trip chat/beer/training session (or all three!) give me a shout
Hi all, my name is Russ. love to chat and a pint. I live in Peterborough , not long now
Hi guys, good to hear from you both.
Sarah, try getting a repellent with 100% 'DEET' or as high as possible, unfortunately it won't smell amazing but is really strong and so in theory should go further! You could also try repellent patches or repellent wrist bands. Also I know 'Craghoppers' and some other companies make outdoor clothing with repellent built in, i believe the material used is called 'nosquito lite'.
Russ, good to hear from you and if you do fancy a pint before we head out let me know.
Hi Sarah, Russ and Rob,
I'm Debbie. I live in Devon so bit far for me to come into London too... Really looking forward to the trip - counting down the days left at work!
I'm kind of ready but still unsure what to do about water purification - what are you guys doing?
Just reading through some posts here...I did this trip with Exodus last October on the same route.
I dont remember any mosquitos, so I would really worry too much about lots of repellant. Of course, it could be that there are less mosquitos in different seasons? I guess they probably dont live at altitude though, so I wouldnt really worry.
Ditto with water...I dont recall doing anything with regards to purification either. Water is boiled by the guides and porters, and they normally give you boiling water to fill your bottles with. I did buy some cheap water tablet things, not iodine based ones, but I cant honestly remember using them religously, if at all. After the hike each day they serve tea / coffee...and they do the same in the morning to wake you up too. Even if you do use water purification tablets...I think its very unlikely they guides do with all the tea and coffee they serve. No one had any sickness or problems on our trip.
Shameless plug, but thats the link to my ebook about the trip last year. £1.
Enjoy the trip. I think all 12 of my trip made it to Gilmans...10 of us went on to Uhuru. Some more good advice to to buy a buff type thing...widely available in outdoor shops...its very very dusty en-route, and its good to have something to cover your mouth.
Hi Debbie, nice to hear from you. Not long now! I received my 'label for life' thing from Exodus in the post this morning, can't wait to get going now :D
Thanks Nick- wise words!
Has anyone received their exodus kit bag yet?
Hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine...
I received a letter on Monday telling me that the kit bags are no longer coming due to the ships that bring them to the UK being re-directed to protect them from pirates! Those pesky pirates yaarrrrr!
No bags??? Oh no! Another thing to worry about!! I spent today trying to orgnaise all the things I still need to sort before the trip.... Didn't get very far! I got a little confused when it comes to the money. Do we need to change as much as we need into Tanzanian shillings, or are some things payable in US dollars? And presumably we can change sterling into shillings without converting it into dollars first? And as for how much to take...well...I can see me carrying around far too much cash 'just in case'. Anyone know how much an average beer might be at the hotel? I seriously do not want to be sat there with a tap water watching everyone else refresh themselves with a proper drink after the trek!!
Has anyone else made a decision yet on what to do on the final day (safari/village walk)? I think I quite fancy the local walk, but am a bit of a sheep and will probably follow the majority!
See you all soon, Sarah
Thanks Smurf for the advice, I was going to say I'm just taking dollars I was going to take 300 pounds sterling worth as this should be more than enough including tips and the day trip? Also Sarah I found this website http://www.expat-blog.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=5102 (most of it is irrelevant for our trip) however it does state that a beer should cost about $1!!!!
Hi all, just want to say I'm so excited now! Can't wait! Will meet you all in Marangu - I'm on a later flight than you guys...
Hey everyone! Can't wait now! Ive just started packing and just want to start the climb now. Is everyone (with the exception of Debbie obviously) on the 20.00 from Heathrow T4??
