Money questions - Syria (ATMs etc) -
Trip - AXJ - PETRA & PALMYRA, Departure Date - Saturday 8th May 2010

I'm off to Syria at the weekend on the Petra and Palmyra trip and I was just wondering if anyone has any advice on the best currency to take from the UK - does it make any difference if you take Sterling versus US Dollars (in terms of ease and rates of exchange)?  Also are ATMs readily available and if so do they accept UK cards?  The trip notes suggest not all ATMs do but doesn't indicate whether there are many that do!

 Thanks

Hi, I was in Syria last year and we took a mix of USD and sterling. It's not a problem changing sterling in banks in the larger cities such as Damascus and Aleppo but dollars are useful in smaller places like Palmyra as hard currency. ATMs are available, again in the cities, but not smaller places. Most accepted UK cards but you might need to try one or two until you find one that does.

Have a great trip - it's a wonderful country!

Hi Nick, thanks for the advice - it sounds like I don't need to worry too much about being able to get money.  I'm really looking forward to seeing Syria so I hope I enjoy as much as you clearly did.
