Morocco - For clients on Atlas Panorama, Highlights of Morocco or Marrakech & the Sahara - 31st May 2011 - 1:18pm

On a recent Volunteer trip to Morocco we met another group who hadn't heard of the project in Tijhza, and wished that they had known that they could bring things out for the villagers. We also overheard another group talking about the project whilst we were there and we suspect that the guide hadn't quite accurately described the project. If you are interested in knowing more about the project please read the link below for the page on Exodus's Responsible Tourism section.A few things to note:DO NOT give any money directly to the teachers please. The Village Association is having problems with the school and the level of education provided. As yet the teachers have done nothing with any of the money donated and are unable to account for it. If you do wish to make a donation whilst in the Village, please seek out Carolyn or her husband Mohammed who will make sure that it goes in to the project. If you have any old clothes, reading glasses, vitamin pills or first aid supplies that you wish to leave behind, again please seek out Carolyn or Mohammed. Some of the women in the village are trying to create an income for their families by making carpets or jewellery. The prices are very reasonable, you don't need to barter and you are making a real difference! Again please seek out Carolyn. Their kasbah is very close to the gite and if your guide can't give directions then nearly anyone else in the village can point you in the right direction!Finally, work has begun on a village hammam, which will provide benefits to all the village, so once it's open, if you have the chance please pay them a visit! Thanks so much Beverley for mentioning this (and all the work you've been helping with in Tijhza on those volunteer trips).

Although the information about what to take to the village is mentioned in trip notes and leaders provide information each week with what Exodus (and Andy Mckee of course) have managed to complete in the village. This is very useful for other clients who may not have spotted this information before travelling.

If you missed the chance to take any items out to Morocco you can still help by either sending your leftover dirhams into the Exodus office (for the attention of Amanda Ceraolo) or making a donation via Friends of Conservation. These funds are all to be used towards the building of a hammam nicely started with our first volunteer group of the year and not only will it provide an income for many villagers but we hope also it will help them avoid other hygiene issues.

Long shot, anyone have a detailed map they want to sell/donate of the area (around 1:100000) including the the Atlas Panoramic tour (Telouet/Anemiter area). Been promised a photocopy by Exodus, but it would be nice to have one.
