I am going to Kenya and Tanzania in October and have been advised by the nurse and also friends to have the rabies jabs (Rabipur). However it's looking very pricy and I wondered if anyone had found anywhere in either London or online (legit of course) that they found to be rather more reasonable. Of course it may be that I have to swallow the cost (approx £130) for the sake of my health.
Any advice much appreciated.
Ive never had a Rabies injection after doing alot of overlands in africa and have never felt that i need it. Im going back to Kenya and Tanzania in 3 weeks and ive not seen any documentation to support the need for the injection and my nurse didnt say it would be needed. Personally its a personal choise rather then requirement and would be a more needed vaccination if you were to spend time within village communities. Have you spoken to Exodus to get there view as most of the time all the vaccinations required are detailed in the dossier.
Thanks for your reply. Well, Exodus said up to me but prob not necessary but the nurse recommended I have them along with another lady I know who runs a travel company and who goes to Africa quite abit. She actually said she'd started to hear more horror stories around rabies and so now advised people have them to be sure (I went to South Africa with her company a few years ago and she said they weren't necessary then so things have obviously changed).
It's thus obviously a very personal decision but on the advice I've received I've decided I will have them as a precaution. Just trying to save a few pennies if I possibly can though...
is that I can't actually now find this anywhere! The chemist couldn't find any to order in and I've searched around but to not avail so far (Boots, Superdrug...)! There is apparently a major shortage!!
If anyone finds this can you please let me know where you got it from?!
Hi to anyone reading this post
Just to say that the only place I managed to get rabies jabs in the end was with Nomad. I had a private presciption for Rabipur but it appears to be in short supply and not back in stock until at least mid October 2012 so if you need it for a trip then look into this now.
I also read that there is a short supply too of rabies immunoglobulin which is what you need if bitten/scratched so another reason for having the jabs before your trip I would say. Details below...
'There is a worldwide shortage of an injection made from blood that gives immediate short term protection against rabies (this is called rabies immunoglobulin). You must have this injection if you had a potential rabies exposure and have not had the full rabies vaccine course (three injections). If you have any kind of exposure while travelling, try to find a main hospital used to dealing with rabies exposures. If immunoglobulin is not available, you need to travel urgently to a country with immunoglobulin supplies for effective treatment. It is important to remember about this shortage when deciding whether or not to have the vaccine before you go. Carry your rabies vaccination record'
