Hi, is anyone off on this spectacular trip? My friend Julie and I have just signed up, and already starting the training!
Hi Marion (and Barbara) - good to know it's not just us that are a little worried. The gym training is going well, although, I'd much rather be outside that on the cross trainer in this nice weather! Julia and I have been doing the Lakes too - it's only an hour away from where we live near Manchester. There is even a plan to go to Snowdon next weekend for a little walk!
I'm not sure of the best plan for altitude though - think all you can do is be as fot as you can be, and hope for the best. So far, touch wood, I have been lucky at altitude, but Julie hasn't ever been high enough to know. If you fancy joining up for some walks in the summer, just let me know - keep us all going with the training!
That sounds like a plan - although Alison is actually in Sussex so she won't be able to join probably. I'm working on gym stuff at the mo, although I did do an 11 mile walk round Lymm Park and the peaks yesterday- and felt it on the last mile!! Maybe we can put some dates in the diary and see who can join. It'd be good to meet up before anyway - I kind of suspect we'll all have to get each other up this mountain! :-)
Hi all, It does sound like we're all from the NW! Julie and I live in Warrington, so peaks and the lakes are easy to reach for us too, but most definitely on the weekend! Nice work on the 11 mile walk - the first one seems to be the hardest - a bit like going to the gym!
Happy to meet up somewhere if you like - I'll have look at some walks in the lakes, and see if we can perhaps arrange a day. Not the best at map reading, but learning as I go!
Hi everyone, not long to go! Hope the training is going well? Had a bit of a set back after twisting the old ankle, but on the road to recovery!
Think I'm just about there with all the kit.... Lookign forward to it now!
For those that dont know me, im Carolines friend - Julie! Im also a little nervous about the altitude sickness, but ive had all my jabs now so im going regardless! If it gets me it gets me - nothing I can do, apart from get over excited about the safari - check out where we're staying!
Hello ladies, that lodge looks amazing! I have to keep reminding myself "it's a holiday, it's a holiday.." Have now had yellow fever jab - so far unaffected! and picked up my diamox - you have to try it out at ground level before you go as many of the side effects are the same as altitude sickness.. All kitted out now, and practice packs done (not as many as Julie but am getting there ;-) So I guess it's now just to keep up with the bootcamps and keep walking, walking, walking until we go.. xx
Hi Marion - I would loved to have come along, but am on a pre-Kili holiday that week! I will be lookign at doinga few walks when I get back though, more than likely in the lakes! If you've got any others planned, just shout!
I'm off to see my fellow traveller Ali who lives near Brighton, so we're walking the south coast again. Going up to Scotland over the Bank Holiday to tackle a couple of Munro's. It's all getting very close now! How's everyone getting down to Heathrow - I'm flying down from Manchester. xx
Hi Marion - Ive had Yellow Fever and had no side effects whatsoever! I may be wrong but I thought we had to have it to get the certificate we need to enter the country..?? Also Ill definately be taking Diamox with me... ill be using it as a cure only, not prevention as the side effects are meant to be strange! Going to test the tablets out for a couple of days before I go though so I can work out the difference between altitude sickness and Diamox side effects!Hope this helps....
Hi, I've also had yellow fever, apart from a very slight temperature the next morning, no major side effects. I was told that as we are transiting from Kenya, we do need the certificate to get into Tanzania - but it's all a bit confusing. Got it to be safe really. I've also got Diamox, was told to test it over two days at sea level before the trip to check the side effects. Again, using it as a cure I hope. All getting very close now... eeek! x
