Hopefully booked on this trip - waiting for confirmation, but already asking questions....
I've read that a 25-30L rucksack is enough to carry what we need for the Inca trek part of the tour - do we have to carry sleeping bags and mats - within our max 7kg allowance? Just wondering howmuch room this would take in my bag, even if I'm frugal with clothing etc
I did the Inca Trail & Amazon Rainforest trip last year. A 25-30L rucksack will be fine as this will act as your day sack. All you need to carry in your rucksack is water, camera, any snacks you take and waterproofs. Your sleeping bag and sleeping mat will go inside your Exodus kit bag along with your clothes which is all included in your 7kg limit (and it does get weighed) and is carried by the porters. 7kgs isn't a great deal after your bag and mat, but don't worry about wearing the same clothes every day for that part of the trip - everyone else does and is in the same boat! You personally can carry whatever you like but I wouldn't weigh yourself down too much. It's surprising what you can get by on for a few days! Have a fabulous time!
That's really helpful - thanks. Really looking forward to what looks like hard work, but well worth it!
I'm the trip manager for all our Peru holidays, and would like to say that Vicki's answer is absolutely spot on. The only thing I'd add is that you'll probably want to carry some warmer clothing in your day pack each day - there are a couple of high passes on days 2 and 3, and although it may be warm when you start out at campsites the weather and temperature can change quickly as you ascend and you need to be prepared for that. And definitely don't worry too much about multiple changes of clothes - just embrace the fact that most other people will be wearing the same thing for a few days and you won't be judged for not having fresh clothes every day!
Hope you have a great trip - I'm off on the High Inca Trail trip next month and am pretty excited about getting my hiking boots on.
Thanks for the extra bit of advice. Hope you ebjoy your trip!
