My partner and I are also on this trip.
I'm excited but worried about all the things that still need sorting i.e money, equipment, Visa, vaccines and other tablets.
Hi Rhiannon !!! My sister and I are just getting our Visa on arrival . We are flying out a day earlier (8th December ) as got better flight connections . We figure out we are taking around 200 dollars for tips and from what I can gather , there is not much opportunity to spend much more on the mountain so around £100 just for any extras .
More worried about the actual fitness level ourselves as only 3 weeks left and training has left a lot to be desired !!! I have heard there are gonna be 14 of us in total , looking forward to meeting everyone and hopefully all reaching the Roof of Africa together !!!
See you both very soon
Excuse me for butting in to your thread but I've got a couple of money tips from when I climbed Kili via the Rongai route in February.
Regarding money, you need $50 for your Visa (if you can get this before you go then you'll avoid queuing at the airport...no great hassle though). Your evening meals at the hotel won't be included...I stayed at the KIA Lodge hotel, which is next to the airport, and they did 3 course meals for about $20-25...and bottles of Kilimanjaro beer for about $2-3 (the finest beer you will ever have after your trek).
On our route the only opportunity to buy anything was a coke from Kibo hut...dunno about your route but I would imagine the only money you'll need is for the tipping ceremony (tissues at the ready for this by the way, if ours was the norm)...I can't remember how much we paid each but allow $200.
Have plenty of $1 bills for tipping at your hotel...it takes a while to get used to tipping etiquette...I just tipped everyone (but probably don't tip the barman when you buy every drink...perhaps when you leave the bar).
On my last day before flying home I visited a Masai village which was arranged by the hotel staff and is definitely worth doing, if only to see the smiles on the kids faces...afterall if you're travelling all that way you might aswell make the most of it...it cost about $40 (taxi + driver + Masai fee). You can buy souvenirs from here aswell, cheaper than the hotel. Tip for buying souvenirs: pick up the item you want, ask how much then put it back down...you'll probably find they half the price (not in the hotel though, they'll have yer eyes out).
My last tip is to take any unwanted clothes, including kids clothes. You'll grow very fond of your guides & porters, who are quite poor and are grateful for anything you can give them. You don't have to carry the clothes with you on the trek, your head guide (he picks you up from the hotel) will keep hold of everything until he picks you up at the end of the trek and you can hand everything out.
Last, last tip...take LOADS of sweets and chocolate!!
I've just added some photos to the TYW code (Rongai route)...might whet your appetite.
Looking forward to the trip and meeting everyone, some warm weather will be nice.
See you all in a couple of weeks,Marc
