We went on this volunteer trip last September (2010) and it was one of the most memorable and emotionally rewarding trips I have ever done. We had never done a volunteer trip before and was a little apprehensive that we would not know what to do or have the skills required. However as soon as we arrived at Lusaka airport and met by Andy our minds were put at rest. We had a great group of people from mid 30’s to over 70 years old and we all managed to find something that need doing that suited our abilities. These activities ranged from mixing concrete to painting the blackboard to making a compost heap or simply just helping the school children in lessons. All the work was done in the morning and in the afternoon was play time, we taught the children rounders, skipping, rugby etc. and by evening sitting around the fire we were teaching card games (from snap and pairs for the young ones to whist etc. to the adults). The home stay was fantastic and the hospitality shown by our hosts who literally have nothing was exceptional and inspirational to us all. We were all extremely sad to leave and many have vowed to return when possible. This is a fantastic trip and I would recommend it as a gentle way to dip your toe into volunteering, and was a very rewarding and enriching experience.
Steve and Heather
totally agree with Steve and Heather. Before leaving on the trip, I was looking forward to the wildlife element. But the stay in the village and the volunteer work was fart and away the highlight of the trip. The people in the Kasalu village are truly wonderful. By comparison with us, they have so little and yet they are so resourceful, so generous and just so lovely. We all carried out different tasks to help improve the lot of the local people and played with the children, who were just so enthusiastic. The school is an inspiration - would that children in the UK were so keen to learn! I would say to anyone who is thinking about doing this trip - DO NOT HESITATE! go! you will nto regret one minute of it.
