Exploring Chile from top to bottom: the Atacama Desert, Santiago, the Lake District and Patagonia

Chile is a thin country, 4000km long and 190km wide but with an unparalleled range of geographical regions. Northern Chile's Atacama Desert is the most arid in the world, with salt flats and geysers, and a cradle of ancient indigenous cultures. Around Santiago, in central Chile's fertile valleys, is the New World's wine industry and beautiful colonial coastal towns and beaches. Further south lies the Lake District, with dramatic peaks and snow capped volcanoes. Finally, in the extreme south, is Patagonia, the 'uttermost part of the earth', a land of lakes, mountains, glaciers and immense solitude.

Day 1	Depart London.
Day 2	Arrive Santiago; afternoon city tour.
Day 3	Full day excursion to Valparaiso and beaches of Vina del Mar.
Day 4	Fly to Calama; transfer to San Pedro de Atacama. Explore the Valley of the Moon.
Day 5	Visit the village and musuem of San Pedro; afternoon explore world's largest salt lake - the Salar de Atacama.
Day 6	Full day excursion high into the Andes to El Tatio geyser.
Day 7	Fly to Puerto Montt; to Puerto Varas in heart of Lake District. Afternoon at leisure.
Day 8	Full day tour of Lake District including cruise on Lago Todos Los Santos, and an easy walk on lava fields of Osorno Volcano.
Day 9	Fly to Punta Arenas in Patagonia. To Puerto Natales.
Day 10	A full day of sightseeing and short walks in Torres del Paine N.P.
Day 11	Optional full day zodiac/boat excursion through Torres del Paine on the Rio Serrano to Balmaceda Glacier; afternoon return to Puerto Natales.
Day 12	To Punta Arenas; fly to Santiago.
Day 13	Depart Santiago.
Day 14	Arrive London.
