Finnish Wildlife Weekend

As this a predominantly a wildlife based trip it is highly recommended that you bring a good camera and binoculars. A notepad might also be advised to record your various sightings.
As it is summer time it is also recommended that you bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen as the sun's intensity can be amplified when on the lake, however waterproofs are also a good idea as well.

The hotel Kalevala is located on the shores of Lake Venejarvi, a characterful wooden building with 44 twin-bedded rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. Suites are available for a supplement of £33.50 per person per night. The excellent restaurant overlooks the lake, and serves 4-course dinners with plenty of local produce including fish and wild berries.
Other facilities include two saunas (male and female), a peat sauna and wellbeing department with Jacuzzi and massage services. Communal areas include a welcoming lobby with a warming fire, library room and internet access.
One of the nights is spent in our bear hide located near the Russian/ Finnish border in the Boreal Wildlife Centre. This specialized hide is equipped with comfortable viewing chairs, sleeping areas (with sleeping bags included) and dry toilets.

As the location of this trip is not far from the Arctic circle, daylight hours are longer than that of the UK and can range from between twelve to sixteen hours of direct sunlight and two to four hours of twilight. When out in the sun care should be taken to drink plenty of water and protect yourelf, especially when out in the canoe as the suns intensity can be amplified by reflections off the lake.
