Amazing wildlife in a stunning setting with highly experienced guides

Free from the icy clutches of the winter, summer in Finland reveals a stunning new landscape of crystal-blue lakes and pine forests as far as the eye can see.
Stirred by this change of climate, the forests become alive with wildlife as they emerge from a long hibernation. Although it is impossible to schedule nature, our base located in the far reaches of eastern Finland increases the chances of spotting bears, beavers, wolves and even Finland's most elusive resident, the wolverine. From here, with our expert guides we fully immerse ourselves into the home of the forests' inhabitants; be it by silently gliding across Lake Venejarvi in a canoe or spending an evening in a comfortable bear hide.
For budding photographers, we also have the benefit of a wealth of experience from highly commended local photographer Antti Leinonen and accomplished local filmmaker Kari Kemppainen. This is the perfect quick getaway for wildlife and photography enthusiasts or for those who simply wish to unwind in the tranquility of nature.
What makes this trip responsible?
Our accommodation for this tour, Hotel Kalevala, aims to generate employment and revenue in the Kuhmo region by working closely with smaller local businesses, such as one-man run safari companies, that work to promote and sustain the area in which they grew up in. Local traditions are encouraged and preserved through the hotel as it includes entertainment programmes that see ancient folklore interact with the guests through singing and dancing. The hotel uses as much local produce as possible, including berries, mushrooms, fish and rye bread from the nearby bakery. As the summer period is off-season for tourism in the Kuhmo region, by being part of this trip you will be directly contributing to the sustaining the area and the economy within it.
