An absolutely brilliant trip which encompassed all the main sights of China and provided a broad range of sights/activities.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The Great Wall was amazing. It is well worth the extra time taken to go out to Simitai as there are a lot less tourists there than at other spots nearer Beijing.

Yangshuo was my favourite place as the hotel and town are lovely and the surrounding countryside is breathtaking. I really enjoyed the oppotunity to go cycling in the countryside and kayaking down the river as well as the cookery lesson.

The Terracotta Warriors are also brilliant - so life-like they are unnerving!

What did you think of your group leader?
Mao was absolutely excellent. Very patient and highly organised and an absolutely lovely person. Everything ran like clockwork and her English is absolutely superb. The optional activities she organised such as the three shows we saw, were all brilliant and well worth the extra money.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Attempting to cycle on a tandem on the walls of Xi'an.  Getting out into the countryside in Yangshuo with the spectacular scenery.  The opportunity to sample a huge variety of Chinese food excluding the chicken feet though.  Spending my birthday at a dumpling banquet and show in Xi'an.

What did you think of your group leader?
Mao was brilliant - very caring and nothing was too much trouble to make the trip a success.  Very proactive if anything needed sorting,
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Take enough money for the extras - they are more expensive than I expected but worthwhile.  Ask for a non smoking room.  Also I would have liked to have flown home from Shanghai rather than have to go back to Beijing.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Exodus once again have delivered a well organised holiday and I shall certainly be travelling with them again.  Already looking into a trip to Morocco.

This trip completely changed my perception of China, the people and the political regime. An oppresive regime? Not a bit of it. I was pleasantly surprised by the friendliness and happy nature of the Chinese people. Don't believe everything you read in the press!!

The walk on the Great wall. That was a big tick on the must do before I die list.
What did you think of your group leader?
Rocky made the trip. Nothing was too much trouble, always working quietly in the background. His knowledge was remarkable.

Thanks to all my fellow travellers. This was one of the best groups I've ever travelled with. (I've been travelling with Exodus for nearly 20 years.) We just gelled. Packing all 14 of us into a 4 berth compartment on the sleeper train from Beijing to Xian got us off to a good start. The drinks trolley man thought Christmas had come early!!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Cycling across the countryside near Yangshuo, with the mountains jutting from either side and the optional bamboo rafting trip afterwards on the river were the unexpected highlights of my China trip.

What did you think of your group leader?
He was Chinese and spoke Mandarin, Cantonese and English.  He was a good tour leader and advised us of various tourist scams which enabled me to avoid two in Shanghai.  On top of this, I felt he was a nice person overall and so felt comfortable with him.  He also did things outside the scope of his job eg rearranging lunch at another venue at last minute so we can see a live ethnic show.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Beware of locals trying to ask you to go to have a coffee, tea or karaoke.  If you do decide to go (despite my advice) then check the menu prices carefully before ordering anything.  Frequently travellers falling for these scams find themselves paying exorbitant prices for things which will not normally cost much.

Does what it says - shows the highlights of a very big and diverse country. There is a lot of fairly intensive sightseeing involved and also a lot of moving around. Not a relaxing experience but a great opportunity to spend time in a different civilisation and to experience some of the world's great sights

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Difficult to say. The Wall at Simiatai lives up to very high expectations. I had no idea it was set in such lovely countryside. Beijing itself is enorormous but scarely loveable. Shanghai, though, is immensely energising, like a science-fiction city. You get to see far more of the Terracotta Army than I had thought we would, and this was a story I'd found fascinating since reading about its discovery as a lad. If the weather hadn't been disappointing the Li River would probably have taken the laurels - but it rained most of the time.
What did you think of your group leader?
Nice chap and very effective in moving us around. Didn't seem to have the pride and enthusiasm in showing off his country that I've seen elsewhere though, more a well-practised logistic exercise. Probably a cultural difference rather than a personal criticism though. China as a society seems to do tourism as an economic model, and because it somehow feels it should, rather than through an innate sense of hospitality or xenophilia.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Think about if you really want to see China. Don't choose this as your first (or only) trip to Asia. Understand it is a very different society and culture. Expect to jostle with innumerable domestic tourists. Don't be quick to take offence.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
You might have sent me an earlier (more specific) feedback form that got blocked as my inbox filled up in my absence. By all means resend.
