Reality Check
There is a lot to see in the time you are in China, and the distances covered are large, but everything is scheduled so that it doesn't feel too rushed. The trip can be fairly demanding particularly when crossing the Taklamakan Desert to Turpan when it can be very hot. Here we get a real feel for the terrain that early travellers had to cross on foot or by camel.
Our journey will take us through arid desert areas, along fertile valleys, past lakes and some spectacular mountains.
Most of the accommodation is modest but clean, with private facilities. We cover long distances, mostly on 1st class sleeper trains.
The buses that we use are a combination of private and public buses and vary in quality. We travel on a variety of roads. This is an extremely rewarding trip for those wishing to get to the heart of Western China and who are prepared to deal with long journeys, early starts/long days and hot (but also sometimes rather cold) temperatures.
Normal group size and age
Normally 5 to 16, plus local leader and appropriate local staff and drivers. Minimum age 18.
