A varied and interesting introduction to Sri Lanka, it's culture, wildlife and the geography of it's regions

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Too many highlights to really single out one moment, but if pushed climbing Adams Peak for the sunrise and seeing the mountains triangular shadow on the clouds together with the bike ride with local lunch stop stand out.
What did you think of your group leader?
Sujee was great, as were the rest of the team. He had a good sense of humour and infinite patience in dealing with one particularly demanding group member. A bit more information about his country past and present would have been appreciated, but this is a very personal thing (Others may have felt he gave too much!) either way he was always happy to answer questions and it was a pleasure to have him as our guide. A few of us wanted to go back to Yala NP very early the day after our afternoon visit. Sujee arranged this for is and even saw us off at 4.30AM with a packed breakfast, how good is that!
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Men - Take a shirt for the Hill Club, a great sense of colonial nostalgia and do all the options available throughout the trip, they're worth it.
Is there anything else you would like to add?

A few small things on a great trip that may be worth looking at: The hotel used as a base for the rafting and Adam's Peak climb would benefit from AC, but it was only one night and the meals throughout the trip work out a little more expensive than indicated in the trip notes. The products for sale at the wood turning and herbal gardens were very expensive compared to the local shops. None of that matters it's a great trip - do it!

I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the trip. I saw more than I could have expected in two weeks. I thought the balance between cultural sights, activities and relaxation time was excellent. Sujee the tour guide did a fantastic job and helped make the holiday memorable.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Climbing Adams peak in the dark and seeing the sun rise was memorable as was the trip to the elephant sanctuary.
What did you think of your group leader?
Sujee was a fantastic group leader. He was very personable and organised and could not have been more helpful. He dealt with everything very efficiently and with a sense of humour.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
The trip does involve a number of hours travelling between the various sights and activities but the coach was comfortable and the travelling to me was all a part of the experience.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Go on this trip when you can. You will not be disappointed.

This is an extensive trip that takes in most of what Sri Lanka has to offer - one night stops only apart from Kandy (3 nights) and Ahangama (2 nights towards the end of the holiday), so expect plenty of travelling with some early morning starts to pack all the sightseeing in. It may be classed as "leisurely" but I found the ascent up Lions Rock at Sigiriya a bit of a challenge and I opted out of climbing Adams Peak, choosing the white water rafting option instead. All jungle walks, cycling,  and other organised and optional activities were most enjoyable and straight forward!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

I particularly enjoyed the pleasant walk around Horton Plains, followed by one of the best meals of the holiday - beautiful freshly prepared curries and side dishes served in a "local" style roadside hut, way different from the typical tourist restaurants and hotels we'd been eating in up until then. Made a nice change from the endless buffets!

I was among 4 more serious photographers who also managed to organise a second game drive around Yala National Park, which despite the 4am alarm call was well worth it. Although no leopard were sighted, we did spot the shy and rarely seen sloth bear digging up ants in some bushes. Despite some frantic jockeying for position between the 3 or so jeeps that were in the vacinity we all managed to get a worthwhile shot or two before the bear shuffled off out of view. Back to the hotel in time for breakfast!

I also enjoyed the free time we had in Galle Fort, just wandering around the narrow streets taking in the views. There was a very relaxed, slightly hippy feel to this place with less hassle than some of the towns we'd visited, or perhaps it was just that there were fewer people around being the Sri Lankan New Year. Either way its a lovely place to visit, and a shame we couldn't have stayed longer.

What did you think of your group leader?

Sujee is a very accomplished and competent group leader. He managed to pull strings and do a lot of organising behind the scenes in order to make sure that most of the groups' expectations were fully met, while keeping in line one particular member of the group who seemed to want the entire itinerary to be tailored to their particular requirements!

Sujee clearly loves his home country and wants everyone to feel the same way, whilst his strong Buddhist beliefs keep him calm and assured.

Well done and many thanks to Sujee, and his back-up team of Chmi who always made sure the coach was clean and tidy with plenty of cool drinking water always available, and Lasa for driving such long distances safely and comfortably.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

The formal evening meal at The Hill Club in Nuwara Eliya was all a bit of a joke really, and not worth the effort. After dressing up in shirt, tie and trousers and borrowing a jacket (which I was told to put back on having found it too warm and uncomfortable to wear), the food and service were just not very good. Never mind, the surroundings and quirky hotel made up for it.

April in Sri Lanka was hotter than I expected it to be, but plenty of water was at hand and all but 1 of the hotels were A/C and most had swimming pools. Plenty of sun screen and insect repellent required!

The tip kitty organised by Sujee worked really well for us and took the pressure off individuals having to tip guides, restaurant and hotel staff, porters etc. A full account of expenditure was presented to the group for audit on the last day of the trip! Well worth paying into if you get the option.

Meals are relatively cheap and sometimes the buffets are good value, especially if you are short of time and feeling hungry. If not then go a la carte but expect a long wait! Even when ordering meals 2 hours in advance there can be a bit of a wait, but that's why beer was invented! Beers are around £2 a bottle, Three Coins being my favourite.

Change about £150 at the airport and you'll be OK for the first week or more. I took £500 spending money with me, did most of the optional activities, bought a few souvenirs, ate and drank well and came back with £150 unspent.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Some of the guide books suggested that all was not as it should be in terms of animal welfare at the Elephant Orphanage in Pinnawela. I didn't see any evidence of this - all elephants looked in good condition, but its true to say that the place has developed into more of a zoo and a major tourist attraction than an orphanage, as many of the babies are born in captivity and will never be released into the wild. Having said that, if you're OK with zoos then this is a fantastic opportunity to see 80 or so Indian elephants up close, and having a fun time together washing themselves and each other in the river.

An excellent, varied trip with lots of different activities. Accomodation was of a high standard throughout in some fantastic locations.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
How to choose? Floating down a river surrounded by jungle after rafting through rapids if I had to pick but there were too many to mention. Seeing blue whales up close, playing cricket with the locals, cycling through paddy fields.......
What did you think of your group leader?
Fabulous. One of the best we've had. Easy going, knowledgable and fun to be around. Roshan really added to the trip.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Book it! It was very humid so bring plenty of light clothing.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
If you're thinking about buying gems, mainly sapphires get an idea about how much things cost at home.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
    Whale trip.
What did you think of your group leader?
Excellent, with great sense of humour and very good at managing any difficulties. Could not have been better.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
This is an info/ sight seeing trip and gives vgd overall view of country. But  our guide prefers the walking trip, so suggest you look at that if the outdoor type.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Did not rate Adams Peak at all. White water rafting very tame.

This was one of the best holidays, it was action packed and lots of travelling but I enjoyed everything. I even tried things I was not sure I could do and was surprised how much I could acheive. I came home feeling quite exhilerated and full of energy.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
There were so many things during this trip that inspired me, Cycling by a small river, waving to the locals seeing the wildlife, stopping for fresh coconut and a wonderful curry made by the locals served on a banana leaf. The local people were friendly and smile so much they make you feel so welcome. The safari was amazing we saw so many wonderful birds. My trip to the elephant orphanage was a great highlight, we were so close to these fabulous animals and so loved watching them coming down to the river to play and wash.
What did you think of your group leader?
Excellent, he had so much experience and being local meant he knew exactly the best things to do, he was discreet, but always available. I enjoyed the history he gave when we were on our long coach rides, it was good to hear about his country.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
You do have to be pretty fit, but you do not have to do things if you don't want to. It is worth giving things a try as it adds to the enjoyment and memories of the trip. You must like curry!!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I hope I find another holiday I enjoy so much.

A varied trip with beautiful scenery, interesting cultural sites and lots of wildlife. A busy schedule but there was plenty of time to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Quite a few. Climbing to the top of Sigiriya, visiting the many temples, meeting the friendly locals, white water rafting in the jungle, travelling by train through the cloud forest, seeing wild elephants and crocodiles in Yala national park and seeing sperm whales and dolphins on the whale watching trip.
What did you think of your group leader?
Excellent, Sujee was always smiling and joking. He organised everything very well and made sure everything ran smoothly. He was always telling stories and singing songs to help us understand more about Sri Lankan life.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
    Insect repellant is a must!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Sri Lanka is a beautiful country and this trip allows you to see some of its best sites in comfort. As a solo traveller I can not think of a better way to see all the places and experience all the things we did. Some of the hotels are stunning and there was nothing better than to relax at the end of the day either in the pool or having a few glasses of Lion beer. I'm into my photography and wildlife and for me this trip was a dream as there were so many photo opportunities including wildlife, cultural sites, stunning scenery and of course the locals themselves. There is definitely something for everyone on this trip.
