One of the best Exodus trips I have been on in terms of variety and leadership. Morocco is a great place to visit!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Probably the Saharan camel trip and sleeping out under the stars. Or was it the night with the belly dancers?
What did you think of your group leader?
Mustapha was excellent. Charismatic, knowledgeable and considerate. Hard to find any faults.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
If visiting over the winter period Morocco can get very cold at night and in the mountains. A four-season sleeping bag and lots of fleecy layers are a must.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
This trip exceeded my expectations. However, be prepared for one or two days of long travelling and some early starts!

Fantastic trip.  It's a real shame that it will not be run in this format anymore.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Essaweria was great, the perfect ending to a great trip.
What did you think of your group leader?
    Fastastic.  Mustapha was incredible.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
    Enjoy yourself.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Make sure you pack warm clothes in the winter.  Most people did not and spent the trip complaining about how cold it was!!!

    Exodus Response

Thank you for your comments regarding the format of this itinerary. Although the 2008 version was a success, we were forced to make some changes due to a change in one of the accommodations.

I would like to assure you that we are considering returning to this format should the previous accommodation prove they have now met our high standards.

This was a great way to see a lot of the country in a short space of time. We visited hugely contrasting areas and learned a lot about the history and culture of Morocco.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

For me, that has to be the visit to the "gite" deep in a valley in the High Atlas Mountains. The scale of the landscape, the total peace and the opportunity to see a way of life that has changed very little in recent times, was a great experience.

(Not sure that "gite" is the right way of describing the accommodation-it was more like a glorified youth hostel, but  fun neverthless.)

What did you think of your group leader?

Moustapha was fantastic in every way! He showed great patience and humour in dealing with the various needs of the group, was hugely well-informed and proud of the culture of his country and always had a keen eye to our safety and wellbeing.

Mention should also go to our driver Jemal who kept our minibus spotless and always drove safely on some "interesting" roads!

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
If travelling during December or January, make sure you pack those thermals, hat, gloves and that good quality sleeping bag! It got very cold sometimes and heating was non-existent in the rural areas, as were hot showers. However, accommodation was adequately clean and there were plenty of blankets for extra warmth at night. Also, take a bottle of antiseptic hand gel to keep in your pocket at all times to guard against tummy problems.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Don't choose this trip if you are expecting luxury but do go if you want a great learning experience and lots of fun. There were some very long journeys between places but tea stops were regular and the company of fellow travellers added an extra dimension to the trip.

This was a brilliantly planned and comfortably executed visit to a diverse and complex land.  The mix of looking at things and active involvement (e.g. camels, hikes) was just right for us (in our 60's).

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Rudd:  The walk in the High Atlas, passing through Berber villages and visiting a primary school.  It was--OK I'll say it--inspiring to see communities of people who are independent, active in their ancient culture, living in both isolation and connection with "modern" life (e.g.: burros, satellite dishes), and who welcomed us tourists without asking us for anything.  The visit to the primary school was enchanting and informative; the visit to a family that gave us tea in the afternoon gave a view of life in the Berber culture.  Our group leader, a Berber himself, added to the impact of that special day with his clear and incisive mini-lectures on what we were seeing.  To one who is worried about the inevitable (??) homogenization of world culture, this was a moving and inspiring look at some people who are managing just fine.  Ever heard about a man who is still working in the fields, happily, at 105 years of age?

Lisa: The camel trip into the desert, especially lying in my sleeping bag on the sand under the full moon, listening to the Brahms Requiem on my ipod!

What did you think of your group leader?

Mustapha was so good that we would seriously consider taking any other tour that he leads.  This was our first Exodus trip and we really didn't know what to expect.  Mustapha did an amazing job: helping the group to bond together, pacing the schedule perfectly and sensitively, and providing excellent information throughout the tour.  We came home feeling that we had been shown much more of the culture than we expected.  He also has a great sense of humor!

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Rudd: You are not going to be pampered on a daily basis on this trip.  There are mostly wonderfully comfortable parts but some that aren't so comfortable (irregular hot water and electricity).  Just keep in mind that this is an affordable trip, and being affordable inevitably means points at which you have to put up with some inconvenience now and then.

Lisa: If you go in November, as we did, be sure to bring enough warm clothes.  I think that most of us optimistically packed for summer as well as for the cold, but although it was quite warm in the middle of the day, it was never really hot.  Some of the hotels (Todra Gorge) and the gite were very cold indeed, and I was glad I had brought my long underwear.

I was happy that I had read some Paul Bowles novels (especially "The Spider's House") and looked at the Morocco "Culture Shock" book before coming - it made the trip even more exciting.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

This trip was a wonderful introduction to Morocco.  It had a great balance between the cities - especially Meknes and Fes with their imperial heritage - and the rural areas in the south and in the High Atlas.  The scenery is varied and beautiful, from snow-capped mountains to the arid plains and the desert, and the whitewashed town of Essouira, which reminded us of a town on a Greek island.  It was only the second time we have traveled in Africa  (the first was an independent trip to Zambia in 2005) and we were impressed with the richness of Morocco's culture and history.  The chance to meet some of the (multi-lingual!) Berbers in the desert and in the High Atlas mountains deepened our understanding of the country, as well.

We wish we hadn't already done this so we could do it again.

Our eyes were opened to the amazing diversity of scenery and experiences that Morocco has to offer.  We enjoyed the variety of accommodation and good level of organisation which added to the enjoyment of our visit.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

    We were wowed by:

Walks in the High Atlas, at Todra and stay at gite

    Fes generally, especially the souks

Watching the changing landscape on our journey

What did you think of your group leader?
Lahcen did an excellent job, thoughtful, listening to our views and adjusting plans as a result and with a good sense of humour.  Knowlegable about the country's history (overload at times!) and when asked happy to share the local way of life
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Be flexible and aware that we aren't all the same.

Get stuck into the local food and drink even if it sometimes lacks variety - it can be very good  (not too many chips!)

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Pity that Exodus doesn't offer this trip any more - we count ourselves lucky to have chosen it.

This was our first group holiday and we will certainly be doing another one with Exodus. The trip was excellent in every aspect, good value for money and very well organised. Morocco is an amazing place with such a vast array of sights, smells and sounds.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Very difficult to choose one in particular as there were many very different experiences.....the camel ride and camping in the desert was spectacular. I also really enjoyed the High Atlas and seeing how the rural Berber communities live.

What did you think of your group leader?
Our leader, Lahcen was excellent. He had a terrific sense of humour and really engaged with the group. We learned so much from him about Morocco and Islam. I don't think the trip would have been the same without him!
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Just to make sure you read the trip notes so that you know what to expect and keep some toilet roll in your day pack as quite a few restaurant toilets didn't have any! A headscarf is useful for the desert but you will have plenty of chances to buy one there for a reasonable price if you don't already have one.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
It was so stunningly beautiful right up in the High Atlas mountains.  Snow topped mountains, almond blossom and green fertile fields.  Friendly Berber people and we experienced a way of life which must be little changed in hundreds of years.
What did you think of your group leader?
Mustapha was excellent.  He had a good sense of humour and was enthusiastic and knowledgable about his country.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Do take lots of very warm clothes - I wore two fleeces most of the time.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Excellent holiday.  Good group of fellow travellers.  We saw so much of Morocco in all its variety and glory.
