Frequently Asked Questions

About Your Trip

How tough is the climb of Mount Kinabalu?

Dont underestimate the jungle trek up to the Pinnacles, which is hard graft, ascending through dense, damp canopy in very humid condtions. But well worth it for the spectacular views at the summit!

Alistair Grice  - Sales

What clothing and kit is essential for Borneo?

It is generally hot and humid and casual clothes are recommended, particularly in the towns and cities. Women should dress conservatively in Malaysia so as not to offend Muslim sensibilities - they are a very frienly and relaced people but vests and tight fitting clothes are not recommended. Whilst in the forest and national parks, T-shirts and shorts are best, especially for the walks. There are limited laundry facilities, so you will need to bring clothes that wash and dry easily. A swimming costume will also be well used!

Insect repellent can stop you getting bitten by any bugs along the way. You can choose between natural and chemical, depending on poersonal preference. Some ear plugs are useful for any nights in the jungle as it can get very noisy!. If you have some decent binoculars, they are great for spotting wildlife high in the trees. Also, take some flip-flops, as it is customary to remove your shoes when entering traditional buildings.

Leeches are more of an annoyance than a real threat, and leech socks can be bought locally from your leader for about £3 at the start of the trip.

How basic is the longhouse?

The night in the village longhouses is basic with communal washing facilities, and more than likely no hot water. There are ceiling fans. However, basic as it may be, it provides a great insight into rural life. All bedding and towels are provided.

What is the food like in Borneo?

Malaysia is renowned for its culinary excellence and Borneo is blessed with a rich variety of traditional food created by its many tribes and indigenous groups. They are able to turn wild plants, herbs and fruits into culinary masterpieces that will tantalise your senses! In addition, its sweeping coastlines and many large rivers provide an abundance of seafood and freshwater fish for the dinner table. Rice is a staple but in the far north, corn and tapioca are popular.

Vegetarians are well catered for but please inform us before departure of any special dietary requests. Please note that in Borneo the availability of certain products is minimal or non-existent, for example wheat or dairy-free, please be prepared for this and you may need to bring these from home.

Are mosquito nets provided in Borneo?

Mosquito nets are provided at all the accommodation used, with the exception of Melinau Gorge and on the Mt Kinabalu, which is at altitude where they are not needed.

How much do you spend on food in SE Asia?

On average, a lunch should cost no more than £3 and dinner up to £10 including drinks. The standard and quality of the restaurants is very good while still retaining a traditional ambience. In the more remote locations, it's amazing how the local people can prepare such delicious meals!

Diane Knight - Sales
