Fantastic trip exceeded all my expectations and then some - will definately be going back.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Highlights and pure 'moments' included the Pinnacles, Mulu National Park, wild orangutans, immense limestone caves with bats & guano as well as the magnificant rainforest and Mt Kinabalu!
What did you think of your group leader?
Manuel was the best tour guide I have ever had on any activity trip for Exodus or any other tour operator.  Throughout he was knowledgeable, entertaining (he has a great sense of dry humour), professional and always a step ahead to ensure that all in the group were treated as individuals and their needs catered for.  I will be putting him up for an Exodus Award as well as Wanderlust Travel Mag tour guide award.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Look up the Pinnacles as an optional extra activity - it doesn't appear in the trip notes and requires a pretty high degree of fitness and head for heights but was certainly my highlight - awesome spectacle. (Cost was R75 for the guide - you are not allowed to do it without one).

A 3 part trip - jungle and caves, orang-utans and wildlife and finally Mount Kinabalu. A fast pace trip which will leave you shattered but with some great memories of Borneo.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
There are lots of special moments on this trip but my top two are - Seeing orang-utans in the wild and climbing and summiting Mount Kinabalu.
What did you think of your group leader?
Manuel was brilliant. Nothing was ever too much trouble. And he was always smiling - and had a great sense of humour. He was very informative and always happy to chat about life in Borneo. Everything ran smoothly and I'm sure that's because Manuel was always working in the background - or was it his magic umbrella??? The local guides were excellent too - particularly on the climb of Mount Kinabalu!
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
    1. Take a poncho - or buy one when you get there. It will rain and it will be very heavy! I took waterproof trousers but never used them - they would just be too hot! Take a small umbrella - the guides use them! 2. Everything will be damp. It's hot and humid. Take dry sacks to keep things dry. 3. Don't worry about the leeches. You can hire leech socks and wellies when needed. Some of the group had leeches but don't let it worry you. Take lots of deet and tiger balm. 4. There are Mosquitos that bite! Again lots of deet - but it's ok - don't let this put you off. 5. If you go caving wear enclosed shoes or boots. Essential!! Use your walking boots if necessary - they do dry - eventually. 6. Do the night walk in the jungle. 7. Camp 5 and Mount Kinabalu - boiled water is free - and it's good to drink. Drink loads! Can buy bottled water everywhere else. 8. Do research on the Pinnacles climb. Some people in our group did it and its tough. Need a head for heights! It's a full day out. 9. Mount Kinabalu is tough but definitely achievable. Don't carry too much - just water - and hire a porter to do this if you don't want to carry it. The last 1,000m is done in darkness - so have a good head torch. And it will be cold at the top - gloves are essential for the ropes section. It's great to get to the top! Don't give up! Take walking poles - though they can be hired - I think they are essential - especially if its wet! It rained all the way down - but hey - all part of the fun of it! 10. Ear plugs are good - when sleeping in huts - in case of snorers! 11. Accommodation much better than I expected. Pay the single supplement - it's worth it - and you have your own room more often than not! You don't need a sleeping bag - a silk liner is useful. 12. Don't take mosquito nets - they are supplied when needed. 13. Lots of food included - but when it's not its very cheap. 14. Pack light. Try really hard to do this. There are places to get washing done. 15. Internal flights are good and adds to the holiday. 16. Malaysian airlines were good and connections very good.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
If you love the outdoors, love wildlife, and up for a challenge of Mount Kinabalu then you will love this trip. You spend a lot of time with the group so go with an easy going attitude and a sense of adventure. It was an amazing way to spend Christmas and New Year with a great group of people! Thank you Exodus for delivering another wonderful experience!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Seeing wild orang-utans on several occasions. All of the other amazing wildlife including proboscis monkeys, macaques, grey and red leaf monkeys, crocodile, pythons, wild boar, hornbills, eagles...... the list goes on!

Climbing Mt Kinabalu for sunrise; a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience.

Seeing 3 million bats emerge from the cave at dusk in neverending ribbon-like formation. Also the smell of the bat guano brought tears to our eyes.... not for the faint hearted, especially at the Gomantong Caves!

What did you think of your group leader?
Arthur was really fantastic. He made sure all the organisation was done efficiently, which considering the amount of travel in this trip, was no mean feat! He had a great sense of humour and interacted well with everyone in the group. He was knowledgeable and informative and gave us tips to ensure we were in the best place at the best time to see and experience things.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Lots of our group got leeches on their legs during the aclimatisation walk in the Sabah Tea plantation. We weren't advised that this was a leech area so no-one wore leech socks. Take some for this part of the trip if you are worried about them.

Do either the night walk or the night cruise at the river. Our night cruise was really exciting and we saw some huge pythons, owls, frogs and crocodiles. It adds another dimension to the amazing wildlife spotting opportunities.

You don't need to take any toiletries on the Mt Kinabalu trek. Everything you would need including shower gel, shampoo, toothbrushes and paste and even razors and sewing kits are availble both at the Park HQ and Laban Rata Resthouse. Pack as light as you can for the trek. It wasn't particularly cold on the night we did the summit trek, in fact we wore shorts! But you do need several layers, gloves and a hat. Do take time to stretch before and after though.... my husband is still suffering with sore calves and thighs 3 days later!!

Don't bother bringing walking poles or mosquito nets from home. You can hire both really cheaply where you need them.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

You won't regret booking this trip but read the trip notes carefully so that you know exactly what to expect. You do need a reasonable level of fitness to do Mt Kinabalu, more for the 8km trek to the Resthouse in the heat, than for the summit attempt. We took half an aspirin a day for 3 days before the trek to try an combat the altitude sickness, which worked well as neither of us really suffered. Two people in our group did suffer though so listen to the advice of the guides regarding this. Nevertheless all 11 of us made it to the top! A great achievement.

    Happy travelling!

Great trip, plenty of variety, Kinabulu summit in sunshine was a highlight, though the descent in rain (the term 'sokaed through to the skin') truly describes a local Borneo downpour was an expereince in itself. Wildlife cruises enjoyable, seeing Orangutans up close was definately another highlight. Well worth the two week trip.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Orangutans in the wild, seeing them up close and personal from your boat on the river really was a highlight........if only 'Clint' had managed to put in an appearance as well! If you are lucky on wildlife cruises, they are worth there weight in gold.
What did you think of your group leader?
Our group leader came into his own in the second week around the wildlife activities, but provided good information throughout the holiday and took us to a couple of nice restraunts.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Waterproof or Buy Local Ponchos at Mulu - cover you and your bag.

Pack your clothes inside a bin bag even if your bag is waterproof, the rain really does get everywhere and you will appreciate dry clothes after a down pour.

Mulu / Camp 5, make sure you have old trainers or footwear that you do not mind getting wet, as with water levels in river it is inevitable that you will have to get out of your boat and psuh at somepoint on your journey to Camp 5........bare feet is not the route to go! Have a go at the 'Pinaccles Climb' at Camp 5, tough and should not be underestimated as it requires alot of scrabbling in high humidity, but worth it........people do turn back, but if you like a challenge give it a go! The only other recommendation I would make is that for Mulu, if you you want to do some optional excursions on your return from Camp 5, book before you leave, the Mulu resort does get very busy and with limited number of rangers things like the 'Canopy Walk' become quickly over subscribed.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
The trip has a bit of everything for everyone, hiking, wildlife, contrasts in landscape, well worth a booking.

An enjoyable trip which can be a little challenging on the kneecaps at times. But a good mix of environments.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The variety of wild life in a natural setting was most pleasing.
What did you think of your group leader?
The group leader had good local knowledge and the ability to organise events around any difficulties encountered.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
You need to get some hill walking fitness prior to the trip . It is worth getting a water proof cape locally which covers you and your rucksack. When it rains it RAINS!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
We had the mountain climb in the middle of the trip which seemed to give a better mix of activities and time to recover before flying back to the UK

Excellent trip, very varied.    The whole group were great fun, overall an excellent holiday.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

So many. Deer caves and the bats. Getting caught in our first torrential downpour reminded us we really were in the rain forest.  Finding our first leech, don't get many of them where we live on Dartmoor!  Reaching the peak of Kinabalu in clear sunshine, then almost having to swim back down in torrentail rain.  Being fortunate enough to see as much wildlife as we did on the Kinatabatang river, wild orang-utans, proboscis monkeys and pygmy elephants.  Chilling out at Kota-Kinabalu resort along with Louis the sheep.

What did you think of your group leader?
Our guide Awang was very knowledgable and good fun.  Reacted positively to our suggestions and organised some extra trips.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Expect it to rain every day and pack accordingly.  We found it difficult to get stuff dry.  Take a poncho or buy one a at Mulu. If you are offered the option of doing the Pinnacles be aware that this is very tough and you need to be sure you will be able to recover in time for Kinabalu.

If you want to do the canopy walk at Mulu insist that your local guide books it up before you go to camp 5.  Our guide didn't book and when we got back there were no places available which was a great dissapointment to all.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Our itinerary was changed and we did Kinabalu summit in the middle of the holiday.  On the whole this was probably a good thing as it would be pretty grim sitting on a plane for 12hrs with such achey knees! We could have done with more time at the Rainforest discovery centre in Sepilok but our short time there may have been due to the itinerary change.
