Frequently Asked Questions

About Your Trip

What will the food be like in Uganda?

Almost all meals are included on the trip and the service can be either a la carte or buffet, depending on the lodge. For early game drives and in order to maximise the time spent in the parks, a packed breakfast or lunch will be provided in some instances. The food provided is a mix of good local and international food throughout.
It is possible to cater vegetarians or clients with special requirements, however please make sure you advise your Sales Consultant at time of booking or our Customer Operations department before departure.
Please also note that in Uganda the availability of certain specialized products for restricted diets, e.g. gluten-free or dairy-free, is minimal or non-existent and we strongly recommend you bring these specialized dietary items from home.

How likely is it I will see the gorillas?

There are local trackers in the park that protect the gorillas all day, so you will definitely see them. The trackers will advise the guides by radio as to their wherabouts, so there shouldn't be any problems.

What kind of footwear is most suitable?

Walking boots with ankle support are best when trekking. Flip flops or any comfortable, airy footwear are fine for the rest of the time.

Tips from staff who have done the Gorillas and Wildlife trip

Clothing
A waterproof jacket (a light one if possible) is a good idea as it can get wet. I would advise taking light walking boots also, as there can be some steep sections and it does help. It's not the end of the world if you don't have them, but I would advise it. I would also recommend something long (in terms of trousers) for the gorilla trek, as there are nettles and thorns in the bushes you walk through. I wore light trainers or sandals most of the days we weren't trekking in the park.
It's fine to wear casual clothing in the hotels, they aren't so strict on dress. Most evenings we just wore light trousers and shirts, cotton tops etc.

Money
Almost all meals are included so you only really need cash for drinks, shopping and tips. I would allow maybe $100 for tips, about $10 -$20 a day for drinks (depends what your tipple is!) and then whatever else you think you might spend on souvenirs. You don't need a huge amount, a few hundred dollars maybe. You can also top up at certain points with a card.
There are ATM machines from Stanbic bank in all big towns or cities. In the big cities like Kampala, Mbarara and Jinja you can find several branches and quite a few machines. In other towns normally only one or two ATM machines are found and they may be out of money! Make sure you always have enough cash with you to cover 3 - 4 days.
Traveller cheques are not common and only accepted in a couple of banks in Kampala. They also give you a bad exchange rate. In some big hotels credit cards are accepted, but it is still not very common in Uganda. Charges are high, normally around 10% so I wouldn't advise using credit cards as your primary method of paying.
