Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in the world (third from bottom in the latest UN human development index) and has very basic infrastructure. Most hotels are simple but clean and the facilities do not always work as you may expect them to and showers may be cold. To fully enjoy this trip, please leave behind your need for western comforts.
Camping at Tiwai Island is very basic, but the rewards are beautiful star-lit skies well away from streetlights and the relaxing cacophony of rainforest noises. The rainforest is not a zoo and seeing wildlife is largely a case of luck.
Food for vegetarians will be quite limited in variety for parts of this trip.
Most roads that we use on this trip are paved, but here are still several long sections of unpaved track. The roads can be particularly bumpy after the rainy season and dusty at other times of the year. A sense of adventure, a sense of humour and a degree of flexibility will be invaluable on this exciting and rugged adventure.
Normal group size and age
Normally 4 to 12, plus leader and appropriate staff. Minimum age 18.
The vast majority of Exodus adventures are adult group holidays. Groups are always small in size. We strongly believe that this adherence to small groups means a better experience for all; more time with your guide, less waiting around and a reduced impact on the communities and environments visited.
Each group is generally made up of like-minded travellers - with singles, couples and friends all joining in together. All these trips are suitable for single travellers, but if you prefer to travel with clients booking individually, please see our Solo Departures page.
Requires a spirit of adventure and some fitness, as the trip may involve more activities or longer journeys.
Wildlife: Trips may be wholly wildlife focused, or contain an element of wildlife viewing within a less specific itinerary.
