Fantastic Cuba! Exodus excelled in it's tour itinery, accurate trip notes and an excellent local guide. Cuba is fascinating. Hotels were better than expected, the pace was busy but managable and the tour guide made it relaxed. Just a wonderful holiday and so pleased we travelled with Exodus, our first experience, not the last. Thank you. Such a balanced range of activities as the pace is busy, as is travelling. Cuba is in my top 5 countries and highly recommended.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Havana...what a special capital city and made me feel alive and appreciate how lucky I am to live in a democracy. The history and culture, vivid street scenes and people watching made the whole country so worthwhile in exploring as much as possible. I have been educated.
What did you think of your group leader?

Excellent and excellent. Great relaxed person with very good communication skills, managed under stress at times- when the bus broke down and he was relaxed and chilled that made the long days managable. Jorge was professional yet friendly and did a superb job. Made the trip really and was very honest with life in Cuba.

Cuba is in my top 5 countries and highly recommended.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
The trip notes are accurate and were flexed to meet the groups needs at times, which is great as it is not rigid and you don't feel like you are on a strict school trip! The coffee in Cuba is not as bad as you may think. Some of the hotels are standard and some are comfort, they can feel very touristy ie for coach loads of tourists but Cuba dictates a lot of that. Just book to see the whole of Cuba and travel with Exodus, was very impressed, we travel more grass roots but this was ideal, perfect.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Some stays with local families, casa particulares, would have made the trip feel complete as some of the hotels are very touristy, however difficult to achieve with 16 people and I appreciate the constraints with Tourism in Cuba.

Great trip to learn more about a culture that is unique and fascinating. Plus a great chance to see a country stuck in a time warp.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Listening to live music, seeing salsa dancing, snorkelling, history and beautiful buildings. Cuban hospitality and insights into a different culture from the guide and local people.
What did you think of your group leader?
Freddie was excellent. Well informed, relaxed and well organised. He made sure we got the best out of every day and tried hard to ensure everyone enjoyed their time.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Don't stress about the currency. The guide will ensure you know when to get the currency at the hotel. Take plenty of batteries for the camera and an iPod for travelling as you are on the bus a fair bit and it can be hard to read. Learn a bit of Spanish and perhaps some salsa dancing as you will be able to use both.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I really enjoyed the trip and can understand if some people don't enjoy the long bus journeys but you get to see a real overview by travelling to the more remote parts. There isn't much exciting food but make sure that you try different things as you are only there once. Buy table cloths in Trinidad and rum in Havana. Take a snorkel mask if you have one. Superb holiday with a great variety of experiences.

I loved this trip as it was very informational about Cuban and world history and also very entertaning with a lot of salsa dancing. Long coach journeys but it was all well worth the sitting.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The Che Guevara Mausoleumin Santa Clara is very inspirational. Up with the Cuban spirit.
What did you think of your group leader?
Best tour leader we could have as he had a sense of humor and he was very patient and did handle all of the people in the gruop very well. He was very knowledgeble and explained a lot about Cuban culture. And very good at multitasking. If I'll go back to Cuba I would like the same guide and also the driver was very nice and polite.

    Go to Cuba!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Overall very well organised tour and hotels rooms mostly good.

A brilliant way to get acquainted with such a different country.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

    The whole trip was inspirational:

Adjusting to the very different surroundings of a communist country which is experiencing the early stages of capitalism and trying hard to adapt to the fast growing tourism industry.

Beautiful, lush countryside with very differing characteristics across the island. Galloping across country on very well trained horses from Trinidad to swim in a waterfall pool has to be a particular highlight for me. Also fabulous beaches which we didn't want to leave.

The contrasts of old and new in Havana as the capital's historic buildings are renovated, whilst side streets still crumble.

The opportunity to learn so much about the country and its very differing towns and cities in such a relatively short space of time - and to dance in many of them!

Finally, having had the pleasure of being in the company of such a diverse, interesting and friendly group. It's true what was said on the last day; we did all feel like a large family after the fortnight together of so many experiences and laughs (and so much rum!).

What did you think of your group leader?

Yazel is a very organised and articulate guide with excellent English, who is also great fun to be around. He took a lot of trouble to explain the official background to the current political, social and economical situation. His historic knowledge and retention of dates puts my memory to shame. He also responded very capably and energetically to every situation we threw at him (and there were quite a few, some of which involved late nights!). Finally he worked hard to ensure that wherever possible, we had an opportunity to experience the slightly more diverse cuisines offered by the family paladares.

Fito is a superb driver who thankfully is also a trained mechanic; due to his skills we just about managed to stick to the first week's timetable because of our temperamental bus! We had no idea that Yazel and Fito hand not worked together before, as they worked together brilliantly and got on like old friends. Both pretty handy dancers, too!

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Although it did eat up some money, I was glad I took the opportunity to do as many of the extra options as I could, this included the horse riding in Trinidad (although there's also a catamaran trip which was very well enjoyed by those who did it), the shows in Havana and the trip to Vinales (although we were tired by then, it was a great opportunity to see part of the island we hadn't yet visited, and the guide for that day - Ida - was superb, plus we could sleep on the bus on the way there!).

I also found it useful knowing some spanish and having done a few salsa classes before I went, plus the Moon Guide was very useful reading before I went, particularly the background information in the last quarter.

Try to get on the group flight from Gatwick, as it will make life a lot simpler. I went separately on KLM via Schiphol and the flights were changed two weeks beforehand resulting in a less smooth start and finish to the holiday than I would've liked.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Just a great trip which does involve living out of your suitcase due to the amount of hotels you stay in (two nights in one place feels like luxury!). Yes, not all of the hotel rooms are as fully functioning (or sometimes as clean) as we westerners are used to, but it feels like a country still getting used to earning its keep. Don't expect this to be a culinary journey, either, it is basic fare with much rice and many beans (we were delighted to get lettuce in Vinales, to put it into perspective!).

Certainly by having such a good local guide you learn so much more about the culture of Cuba and its people, which you wouldn't get on a more typical package, or by going independently. I would now feel much more confident planning an independent trip having had such a safe way of getting to know the country and its peculiarities. And I feel as though I have no choice but to go back, as Cuba now has me firmly under its spell.

Great trip.  Good to see different parts of Cuba.  Plenty of variety of places to eat - didn't matter that the menus were not varied.  Comfortable accommodation.  Everything that needed to work worked (eg. air condtioning). Good balance between history/culture and the occasional walk/swimming opportunity.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Best moment - snorkelling on the reef - catamaran trip from Trinidad.
What did you think of your group leader?
Lazaro was very hard working and always eager to answer people's questions, and to give us as honest a flavour of Cuba as possible.  There was quite a variety of characters on the trip - he managed to keep people happy.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Don't rely on being able to use ATM's at all outside Havana.  Cash is by far the easiest option for getting currency.
Is there anything else you would like to add?

I think if there had been any more people on the trip (we were 10) he bus might have started becoming a little cramped.  As it was we all had 2 seats each.  As soon as internal flights become reliable and safe I would suggest flying from Havana to Holguin to avoid a long day and a half on the motorway where the scenery was flat and unvarying.

Really enjoyed the swimming opportunities.  All of them away from any 'manicured' all-inclusive beach resorts.

Every day was diffrent and exceeded expectations, a very well put together trip.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Very difficult to decide. From the beautiful architecture of Havana to the cobbled streets of Trinidad. The variety of modes of transport was amazing from horse drawn carts to bicycle and the fabelous American vintage cars.Having a pig roast and Mojitos on the beach was one of my favourite days.
What did you think of your group leader?
Lazaro' had contacts everywhere we went. He knew when to stop the bus  to give us the opportunity to buy from locals and to observe traditional ways of life. The places he recommended we eat were usually good.Nothing was too much trouble for him and he was always cheerful.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Take sterling of euros and change money at the airport when you arrive. One of our group had difficulty using a credit card. The exchange rate should be the same everywhere but make sure you check your money even at banks.

Don't expect to see all of Cuba in 2 weeks. I really wanted to go to Vinales but decided i needed more time in Havana. My advice go for 3 weeks.

Don't pack too much, you will need room for cigars, rum and chocolate.

A fantastic holiday that takes you deep into Cuba to experience towns, cities, the countryside and the Cuban way of life.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
So many. Salsa dancing on the street with the locals in Baracoa, making (and drinking) cocktails at the beach on the way to Santiago, Castro's revolutionary hideout in the Sierra Maestra mountains, beautiful Trinidad, a wonderful swim in El Cubano nature park, amazing Havana. The history of Cuba comes alive throughout the trip, the Cuban people-their passion, resiliance and loyalty to their country is admirable.
What did you think of your group leader?
Raymondo worked very hard behind the scenes to ensure that everything went as smoothly as possible, he always helped us with many of the small things like ordering food, sorting out money exchange, room changes if needed. He coped admirably with the level of illness experienced by the group. Andres the driver was also an integral part of the team, he became as important to us as the guide.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Be prepared for a very, very long wait at immigration on arrival (1-3 hours). Take enough medicines to cope with any potential minor illnesses-colds, tummy upsets, toothache etc. One member of the group had a bad cold and in the first few days there are some long drives, subsequently many on the trip succumbed to illness and this negatively impacted on their experiences. Take hand gel (and use it!)  loo roll, tissues, mossie repellent, wet wipes, enough soaps/shower gel so that you can then give the hotel supplied mini-soaps to the poorer rural communities. Take plenty of pens and pencils for them as well.

Take/develop an appreciation of 'Cuban time'-you are on holiday and it does not matter if sometimes things are a little late.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Drink rum. Mohitos, pina coladas or rum and orange in a hollowed out grapefruit and toast Cuba each day.

Salsa dance with the locals at every opportunity.

Take a taxi ride in old American car and also fly around the streets in a little yellow open air motorised cab in Havana.

Absorb and learn about Cuba and it's people, then bring their spirit and resilience home with you.
