Central American jungle and coast - 'Mother Nature's best kept secret'

Campsite by the ruins in Uaxactun, Guatemala

Belize takes to heart its motto; no shirt, no shoes, no problem!

A laid back country with a lively soul, its attractions are seemingly endless, with the second longest barrier reef in the world and a fifth of the country protected in some way. The jungle-clad interior is a haven for wildlife, ranging from the shy and elusive jaguar to over 500 species of birds.

On this action-packed adventure we kayak our way down rivers, visit a 'Mayan underworld' cave system, swim in sapphire sinkholes and don snorkels to discover a myriad of underwater colour.

The delicate corals in the Belize Barrier Reef provide food and shelter to a dizzying number of tropical fish, with manatees, nurse sharks, stingrays and turtles sharing the turquoise waters.

As if Belize isn't enough, we cross into Guatemala to visit two important Mayan ruins, Tikal and Uaxactun. Here we camp inside the park to ensure we're the first visitors to experience a dawn tour of the ruins.

What makes this trip responsible?

Whilst camping, camp staff prepare breakfasts and dinners using food obtained in local markets, ensuring money is spent in the local community. There are various opportunities for interaction with locals. We will meet with a ranger from the Toledo Institute for Development and Education (TIDES) to learn about conservation work in the Toledo area.
